Three online contact managers compared

In a perfect world, the addresses, telephone numbers, and other contact information of your family members, friends, and associates would be entered in your various address books automatically. I'll settle for an online service that lets me transfer the information from my phone and e-mail contact lists simply and accurately.

Last July, I described how to sync calendars and contacts between an iPhone, Gmail, and Outlook. The contact info on my iPhone is always the more current than my Gmail and Outlook contacts, but I access the three contact lists about equally.

Neither the iPhone nor Gmail contacts can … Read more

First contact

ContactKeeper isn't the sleekest, most stylish contact manager we've seen, but as a basic, easy-to-use program for keeping contacts up to date and in one place, it certainly fills the bill.

ContactKeeper's interface is sparse, but in a functional way. Intuitive buttons run across the top of the window for adding, opening, editing, and removing new contacts. Adding a contact is as easy as clicking the Add button and entering the name, address, date of birth, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and important notes for each new contact. Each new entry's details display clearly on the right … Read more

How to personalize iPhone Voice Control

The iPhone's Voice Control features are fun and futuristic. Voice commands also offer commuters a practical way to dial phone numbers without taking their eyes off the road.

But Voice Control isn't perfect, and unique names or pronunciations in your Contacts list can easily foil the software.

Fortunately, the iPhone allows you to get under the hood a little to make Voice Control run more smoothly. By adding fields for phonetic spellings, nicknames, middle names, and more, you can personalize your contacts to work seamlessly with the iPhone's voice-dialing capabilities.

iCatchall: 27 apps for free--Monday only

What's better than 27 apps for 99 cents? Why, 27 apps for zero cents, of course.

That's what you get from iCatchall, which, like last week's App Genie, delivers more than two dozen tools under one app roof. Normally it's 99 cents, but in conjunction with previously mentioned Free App a Day, iCatchall is free on Monday (and only this Monday).

As you might expect, there's a bit of overlap between these two kitchen-sink apps--but less than you might think. iCatchall is actually a mix of tools, games, and sound effects.

Instead of cramming everything … Read more

Printing Envelopes, Labels, and Lists using Address Book

Address Book is a convenient program for managing the account's central contacts database, that also provides the ability to quickly print envelopes, labels, and lists from the contact information. While limited and relatively hidden, these options and various customizations for them are available in Address Book.… Read more

Tackling a slow Address Book

A small number of users have found that the Address Book in OS X may start running slowly, sometimes after upgrading to Snow Leopard or performing another major system alteration, but other times for no apparent reason. Usually when this happens for applications in OS X, deleting the program's .plist file may help; however, this may not be the case for the Address Book.… Read more

Dupe zapper

Microsoft's Outlook does a good job of retaining all kinds of useful information, but its power and complexity make it entirely too easy to end up with multiple entries for e-mail or addresses. Wisco's NoMoreDupes for Outlook add-on searches out and deletes duplicate entries throughout Outlook. It can help you keep your e-mail addresses and saved messages neat and orderly, but it does much more. It finds duplicate entries in your Contacts as well as duplicate e-mails, but it also searches through your Outlook Appointments, Notes, Tasks, and Journal entries, clearly identifying duplicates, some of which you may … Read more

Add your Facebook friends to Outlook and Gmail--sort of

We can all be thankful Facebook doesn't let you export your friends' e-mail addresses and telephone numbers. The export prohibition doesn't extend to other information about your friends, however. A new free service puts this data in a .csv file you can import to your Outlook and Gmail contacts. Unfortunately, the results leave much to be desired.

Export Friends to .csv wasn't developed by Facebook, but rather by J?rn Arild Anden?s. You can choose to export up to 11 different categories of information about your friends, including Facebook ID, name (full, first, and last), profile … Read more
