Sony Xperia line gains smaller SP and L phones

Sony today unveiled two new Xperia phones for people who may find the 5-inch Experia Z and ZL too big to handle.

The Xperia SP offers a super-bright 4.6-inch 720-pixel HD Reality Display. Sony's Reality Display borrows technology from the Bravia TV lineup, which the company says enhances the brightness and picture sharpness. Courtesy of the Mobile Bravia Engine 2, the phone automatically adjusts its display based on the image being viewed.

Wii U unit sales jump 40 percent -- and still disappoint

The video game industry once again had a down month as console and software sales slipped.

Total industry sales hit $810 million in February, representing a 25 percent drop compared with the same period last year, market researcher NPD said yesterday. Hardware sales were down 36 percent to $244.2 million, and console and portable software sales across the physical retail channel could only reach $352 million -- a 27 percent drop compared with February 2012.

AT&T offers Android 4.1 download for Sony's Xperia TL

If you're still waiting for AT&T to update your Sony Xperia TL to Android 4.1 and patience isn't your top virtue, the carrier is now letting you download Jelly Bean yourself.

Sony's PlayStation Vita portable has price tags that can't quite get in line.

The 3G-connected model, which originally launched for $299.99, is currently on sale at several Sony retail stores around the country for $199.97, gaming blog Joystiq reported last night. The blog called a host of Sony stores around the country, and a large majority were selling them at that discounted rate.

Sony Chairman Howard Stringer to retire in June

After having led Sony's board of directors for a year, former CEO Howard Stringer has announced that he will retire from the company in June, the Financial Times reported.

Stringer had his role with Sony increasingly minimized over the last few years. After serving as CEO from 2005 to 2012, Stringer was replaced in that role by Kazuo Hirai, who was at the time head of Sony Computer Entertainment. Stringer remained on the board and then replaced board chairman Yotaro Kobayashi in June of 2012.
