Two of the flashiest colors among Apple's new iPhones also have been the least popular, according to a new consumer study.
The gold iPhone 5S and the yellow iPhone 5C made up the smallest number of sales compared with Apple's other device colors during the past month of sales. That's according to a study of early buyers polled by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).
New research published by the research firm on Wednesday suggests 43 percent of iPhone 5S buyers went with Apple's space gray color, with another 30 percent going with silver. It was a … Read more

During Apple's earnings call this week, CEO Tim Cook alluded to potential shortages of its next iPad Mini, which is set to go on sale next month.
"It's unclear whether we'll have enough for the quarter or not," Cook said. "You never really know the demand until after you start shipping." Analysts, of course, were clamoring for a more firm release date for the next-generation tablet, which is said to be in short supply. Cook's almost boilerplate CEO answer did little to assuage those concerns.

Apple says some buyers of its latest iPhone may experience shorter battery life due to a manufacturing defect on a "very limited" number of models.
"We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life," the company told The New York Times. "We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone."
It's unclear just how many phones that is, which models were affected, and … Read more

There are iPad drawings you look at on a screen, and there are iPad drawings printed on sheets of 3x6-foot paper and mounted on a giant wall. One might call the latter a David Hockney-style iPad drawing.
Hang five such works together and you have "Bigger Yosemite," a series of wonderfully vibrant drawings of Yosemite's rocks, trees, and waterfalls that each measures 9 feet wide by 12 feet high. The piece now hangs in San Francisco's De Young Museum as part of "David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition," a comprehensive survey of more than 300 works made since 2002 by the influential British painter, stage designer, and photographer.
The exhibit, which runs through January 20 across two floors, highlights Hockney's ability to engage with, and master, a wide variety of tools and media. It includes watercolors, charcoals, simple pencil drawings, and oil paintings, but also encompasses 17 works made on an iPad and then printed out on paper, and 147 other iPad and iPhone drawings that rotate on seven LED displays. … Read more
Apple could sell as many as 51.5 million iPhones during the holiday quarter, says Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley.
In an investors note out Tuesday, Walkley said he expects strong sales of the iPhone 5S through December as Apple bumps up supply to meet the heavy demand. The more expensive 5S is currently outselling the 5C by a ratio of 2.5 to 1, according to the analyst.
iPad sales were soft last quarter, Walkley said. Apple … Read more
Investors wanted to know Monday how the iPhone 5C helps Apple reach new, budget-conscious markets, but according to CEO Tim Cook, it probably won't.
In response to questions during the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call about the iPhone 5C's price and the colorful phone's sales in "cost-sensitive countries," Cook said the the iPhone 5C was never meant to be a budget phone.
"That was never our intent, honestly. Our entry iPhone is the iPhone 4S," he said, deflecting the questions about iPhone 5C sales. The iPhone 5C is meant to be a … Read more
