Blogger updates apps for Android and iOS, adds iPad support

Google updated its blogger app today with a new look and a handful of new features, all designed to make posting on the go a bit easier.

The updates, as shared in a blog post on the topic:

Flipboard adds iBookstore perusing to iOS app

Flipboard, the mobile app that lets users see all of their desired news in one place, now supports books.

The company announced today that when iOS users download its latest update, they'll find that they can comb through 25 book genres, including fiction, nonfiction, and cookbooks. In order to deliver that functionality, Flipboard has incorporated Apple's iBookstore into its app and essentially acts as a conduit to help users find out about the iPhone maker's iBooks.

Apple reportedly bans 'memory' games from App Store

Apple is reportedly warning developers of iOS games with the word "memory" in the title that unless they change their app's name, it will be removed from the Apple Store.

The notices are being sent at the behest of Ravensburger, a German game maker that sells a popular series of board games under the brand "Memory" and claims to hold the trademark for the word "memory" in game titles in some 42 countries, according to a report in Gamasutra.

Apple under fire from activists for shooting down drone app

An activist group has organized an online petition to press Apple to stop blocking Drones+, an iPhone app that maps locations where U.S. drone strikes have occurred.

Apple had earlier described the app as "objectionable" and "not in compliance with the app store review guidelines." Apple's rules govern what apps can and can't contain in order to be made available in its proprietary App Store.

Apple appeals Chinese ruling over encyclopedia infringement

Apple has filed an appeal after a Chinese court ruled that the company is responsible for an app that contained pirated material.

The tech giant lost a case brought to court by China Publishing House, which claimed that Apple infringed copyright protection by allowing the sale of an app containing large sections of "Encyclopedia of China" without the publishing house's consent.

The iPhone and iPad-compatible app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store.

In September, a Chinese court ordered Apple to pay compensation of 520,000 yuan, which is roughly $83,000.

Apple co-founder Woz to star in iOS game with 'Machete' actor

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is set to appear as a playable video game character alongside the likeness of "Machete" star Danny Trejo in an upcoming iOS title called Danny Trejo's Vengeance "Woz with a Coz."

The game, which is due on or before November 22 to coincide with Thanksgiving, puts the unlikely duo together in an 8-bit platformer with weapons against a city full of baddies. It's a tie-in and promotional vehicle for Trejo's film "Vengeance," due out next year.

Visa officially launches its digital wallet V.me

Visa has finally brought its digital wallet V.me out of beta.

The company announced its move today, saying that the official V.me launch accompanies deals Visa has signed with over 50 financial institutions that will support the platform. The financial institutions, including America First Credit Union, Capitol Federal Savings Bank, and others, combine to service over 55 million people, according to Visa.

Visa has also signed up a host of online merchants, including 1-800-Flowers and Beach Camera, to support V.me.

BofA takes aim at Square with new mobile-pay service

Bank of America is the latest company to take on Square in the mobile-payments market.

The banking giant today announced a new service for merchants, called Mobile Pay on Demand. The offering includes a card reader that attaches to a smartphone, and allows merchants to handle transactions from the device. According to Bank of America, its service works with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. The service will charge merchants 2.7 percent per swipe.

Square popularized mobile payments with its own card-reader-and-software combination. Square charges 2.75 percent on all transactions.
