Debating the design dilemmas of Apple's iPhone

Remember, folks: different does not inherently mean "bad."

I was surprised at the reaction to my article, published this morning, titled "Coming to grips with the iPhone's design." Specifically, with the way some people see a discussion of design tradeoffs as an attempt to tar and feather the nonconformist.

Yes, you can use your iPhone with one hand. But it's not as easy as some would suggest. Some reviewers didn't think it was that big a deal, some thought it was more of a problem. Whether or not you think it's easy … Read more

iPhone Redux: Streaming iPhone Music, the iPhone hack and no more bills

So this week a lot happened in iPhone-land--unlocked by a Jersey boy that allows anyone to use the iPhone, on T-Mobile...right! But for would-be iPhone owners in GSM-enabled countries, this could mark a watershed. Apparently, I'm told that the menus for selecting which network you want to connect to (provided they're GSM) are already embedded in the software/OS. How interesting.

As for streaming music, Seeqpod How long this site will be around I remain unsure, but it's still pretty cool over a Wi-Fi network, but with the EDGE? This has to be tested, so … Read more

VoiceSignal enables voice recognition in the iPhone

One of the more obvious features lacking from the iPhone has been voice recognition, especially since the iPhone is sans an actual keypad. Well the folks over at VoiceSignal have apparently developed a couple of "proof-of-concept" voice command applications and managed to transfer them over to the iPhone. VSearch lets you search for certain keywords, and VTunes lets you bring up your favorite band/artist on the music player just by saying the name. Thankfully, VoiceSignal has recorded a couple of YouTube videos demonstrating the applications, as seen here. We're curious to see if this takes off … Read more

Unlocking an iPhone for real

One of the biggest gripes we've heard about Apple's iPhone has nothing to do with the headset itself; rather it's over the AT&Tcarrier exclusivity. While phone locking (and unlocking for that matter) is nothing new in the cell phone world, the iPhone is a special case considering how much hype still surrounds it.

That's why it was inevitable that someone would figure out how to unlock the iPhone and free it from its AT&T shackles. Though we've heard a lot of promises, mostly unfulfilled, a real, workable solution now seems to … Read more

Desperately seeking street cred

In the comments of a previous post, the Macalope was chastised for not "keeping it real" since his move to CNET (to paraphrase Merlin Mann, there goes my former biggest fan ever... again).

You'll have to appreciate the position the horned one is in. Some readers seem to think he should "balance out" their perceived anti-Apple bias at CNET (the exceptional Tom Krazit would probably take, well, exception to that, although on the other hand...) while others apparently want him to be less of a MacMac or an Apple apologist.

But let's face it. … Read more

What's the perfect iPhone app?

Phill Ryu, one of my favorite Mac bloggers--and also a developer of fine Mac software--recently came up with five applications he'd like to see on the iPhone. There are already a ton of applications available for iPhone, many of which you can find at our iPhone Approll (a lot of the applications were reviewed by yours truly!). But if you're an iPhone owner, I would bet at least one of Phill's ideas has probably crossed your mind. I think my favorite of the fantasy applications is a fully functional iTunes Store for iPhone.… Read more

The Ents will be happy

AT&T informs the horned one on his iPhone that it is "removing itemized detail" from its bills to iPhone customers. That only took two months too long.

For customers who may be servants of the Lidless Eye, you can still get a full paper bill.

Seriously, who other than someone submitting an expense report to Mordor needs a bill with 10,000 $0.00 line items?
