A cab with a view: two TVs, a laptop and a PlayStation 2

If New York is the business center of the United States and California is its imagination, then Austin, Texas, is the home of its tinkerers.

Exhibit A: cab driver Ricky Gray. Gray owns his cab--a minivan--but he doesn't want it to be ordinary, so he's outfitted it with a widescreen LCD TV in the backseat area that lets passengers watch TV shows, surf the Internet (with assistance with a wireless laptop beneath the front passenger seat) or play games on a PlayStation 2 wedged in the well between the two front buckets. There's also a flat-screen TV … Read more

Can any screen be turned into a tablet?

Digital tablets are great, especially now that they've come down to relatively reasonable prices. But what if you don't have room on your cramped desk for yet another external device like Wacom's "Bamboo"? Navisis claims to have the answer with its "Laptop Tablet," which the Korean company says can turn any screen into a tablet with software that calibrates the pixel-point location of its stylus, according to Gizmag.

The sensor device, which is expected to retail for about $130, looks something like a clip-on Webcam that can be attached to the edge of … Read more

New flat-panel LCDs from Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi rolled four new lines of flat-panel 1080p LCDs today, with a total of eight new LCDs.

We've got the full details below, but here's the short story. All of the LCDs have at least three HDMI 1.3 inputs, along with support for x.v.Color (also known as xvYCC)--a new color space that offers 80 percent more color than standard ATSC color space. These are some of the first displays we're aware of with x.v.Color support, but for right now it's more marketing hype than a useful feature. The problem is … Read more

LCD sleeps with the fishes and survives

Sure, Pioneer is coming out with all kinds of fancy new plasmas today, but tell us this: Can they be dunked under water? And still work, that is.

Water-loving TVs are hardly new, as we've seen those that enjoy an occasional splash by the pool or even a long hot shower. But the "Weatherproof Monitor" from Florida-based Iizell is an LCD that can be submerged a full meter deep, according to Gadgetell. Why one would need to do this is unclear, but we suspect an underwater bar is involved. Or maybe David Letterman will try to see … Read more

An LCD TV that should be invited to parties

If you want a new television and have some money left over after the government has finished taxing you, may we suggest a shiny new model from Samsung? The LE46M87 is from a range it ambiguously calls "Bordeaux." We've licked it, and it doesn't taste anything like wine. If anything, it was a little salty.

The M87 TVs are really rather lovely. Finished in the usual Samsung piano-black finish and some fancy rounded edges, it will call you to touch it--something you should resist, because you'll leave nasty fingerprints all over it.

We're also … Read more

The smallest HD-ready TV ever?

So you've got a 50-inch plasma in the lounge, a 32-inch LCD in the bedroom and a waterproof TV in the bathroom. That only leaves the kitchen devoid of entertainment. No need to panic, though--Bush has released what could well be the smallest HD-ready television your money can buy.

The catchily named LCD15W08DVDHD has a 15.4-inch widescreen LCD, built-in DVD player and, of course, features an HDMI input for watching all your high-definition material.

This TV has a decent range of other inputs, too. There's a VGA-in for connecting a computer, or even an Xbox 360. There'… Read more

How to spend your life in the bathroom

Everyone needs a waterproof TV, of course, but not everyone has a swimming pool to make it truly useful. That's why Envirovision has made an LCD for commoners like us, whose aquatic viewing habits are confined to the bath. But to add a bit of luxury to this household staple, it's now offering a 19-inch version as well.

Like earlier versions, the "Freeview Waterproof Bathroom Television" can be installed practially anywhere that plumbing allows, including the shower. Even more versatile are its waterproof speakers, which are either built into the set or available separately to be … Read more

Westinghouse fleshes out 2007 LCD lineup

Westinghouse provided an update on its 2007 line of LCDs today, confirming much of what we originally reported back at CES. There's a full lineup of moderately priced 1080p models in 42-, 47-, and 52-inch screen sizes, as well as some lower resolution 42- and 32-inch models. Westinghouse is also continuing its line of LCDs with built-in DVD players, as well as a small 19-inch LCD intended to be used in smaller rooms such as a kitchen or bedroom. We've reviewed several Westinghouse LCDs in the past, and although they might not have name-brand recognition, we actually thought some of them were decent bargains. Specs for all of Westinghouse's new LCDs after the jump.

Waterproof LCD for outdoor viewing

Summer will be here in a flash, and we'll be forced to abandon the comfortable confines of our favorite TV-viewing lounge chair. But that doesn't mean we'll have to stop watching.

Frontgate's "SunBriteTV" doesn't just have a bright LCD screen that can be seen in daylight, but it also is outfitted to protect against the elements with an "all-weather enclosure safeguarded from rain, dirt, insects and scratches." Even its cable ports and remote are watertight and dust-resistant.

This Terminator of television sets, which can withstand temperatures ranging from minus-24 to 122 … Read more
