Light bulbs have long been seen as symbolizing good ideas, and that's exactly how Insteon hopes you'll see its LED bulb. For starters, the Insteon LED Bulb will shine as brightly as a 60-watt incandescent bulb while using only 8 watts' worth of energy, putting it squarely in line with other energy-saving LED bulbs. But this is Insteon we're talking about, and sure enough, this bulb is fully automatable on Insteon's network, no separate dimmer module required. Just pick a lamp or light fixture, screw in the Insteon LED Bulb, and you'll be able to … Read more
The installation process on the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat will be different depending on your existing heating and cooling system setup. Keep this in mind when you're starting out so you don't get too frustrated along the way.
Step 1: Go to your circuit breaker and switch off power to your thermostat.
Step 2: Remove your current thermostat and make note of the wires attached to the base plate; this will not be the same for everyone. My old thermostat had a G, a W, a Y, and an Rh wire.
Step 3: Make sure that you tag … Read more
Welcome to the first episode of a new video series called The Next Big Thing. Inspired by the supersession of the same name CNET has been presenting at the Consumer Electronics Show for the better part of a decade, this show will attempt to sort out what's really coming in consumer electronics, digital media, and online services -- and what's just a distraction. It's CNET from 10,000 feet, a view we've never really offered our entire Web audience before.
Awaiting you in this episode:

If you're looking for a start in home automation that's free from fuss -- and, more importantly, free from monthly fees -- then you might want to consider the Insteon Starter Kit, available for $119 exclusively at Best Buy. Insteon claims that with its line of automation products and its free smartphone app, "your home is with you wherever you go."
You should temper your expectations here, as the Starter Kit, with its two LampLinc dimmers and the router-esque Insteon Hub, will only allow you to automate a pair of lamps. Automating just two lamps is … Read more
The definition of the word "smart" as it applies to appliances is still finding itself. Breville considers its Smart Oven smart because adjusts the active heating elements based on which preset you use. Microwave ovens from various manufacturers have used sensors to measure temperature and humidity for years.
The definition also forks if you narrow down "smart" to meaning "connected." Dacor's high-end Discovery IQ oven and Samsung's RF4289HARS refrigerator both have large touch screens and Wi-Fi connectivity, but no companion mobile app.
Most smart appliances, though, do have an accompanying app. All … Read more
Nine months ago, I got the call to move from New York to Kentucky and start up a new review team to write about the coming onslaught of smart home appliances -- connected refrigerators, robot vacuums, Wi-Fi light bulbs, and the like.
And here we are. Here's our new page. I couldn't be more excited.
Welcome, then, to CNET's brand-new appliance review section, which I alluded to earlier this summer. We are indeed diving into the world of the connected kitchen. And the connected laundry room. And the connected porch light.
Call it the "Internet of … Read more
The Whirlpool WDL785SAAM is the first and only dishwasher currently included in Whirlpool’s line of 6th Sense Live smart appliances. At $949, it sits in the upper mid portion of the dishwasher price spectrum. Unlike many other smart appliances we've seen so far, Whirlpool isn't wrapping the connected features in a luxury package. Instead, the company seems confident to let the practical connectivity features stand on their own.
At its core, the WDL785SAAM is a tall tub, built-in dishwasher with a stainless steel tub and two removable racks. Because it is a tall tub washer, it can … Read more
The Whirlpool WRL767SIAM Side-by-Side Refrigerator is the debut refrigerator in Whirlpool’s 6th Sense Live appliance line. At $1,999, the WRL767SIAM has a reasonable price tag, at least compared with smart fridges we've seen from LG and Samsung. If its performance and the utility of its smartphone and tablet app live up to Whirlpool’s promises, it may be hard to recommend those more expensive models.
The WRL767SIAM is a side-by-side refrigerator. Per the product page, it has a 16.6 cubic foot space for the fridge, and 9.9 cubic feet on the left half for the … Read more
