Is Verizon's 'Droid' brand losing its luster?

Don't look now, but we're about to see the release of the fourth generation of Verizon's Droid handset.

Rumors have been swirling for a few weeks now that the Droid 4 would arrive in mid-to-late December with the 22nd (that is, tomorrow) as the most cited date. But with less than one day to go and no announcement yet in sight, are we really to assume that the rumors won't pan out? Actually, I'm not so sure.

Although Verizon typically gives its bigger device launches a week's worth of preorders, it has been known … Read more

Is a Motorola Droid Razr successor already in the works?

If there's one thing that Verizon isn't short on, it's high-end Android phones. Today we get to add yet another model to the growing list as an unannounced Motorola Droid Razr Maxx breaks cover.

Droid Life obtained a document late last week that suggests Verizon is set to offer a variant of the Motorola phone which launched barely one month ago.

Although there are not many details to go along with the leak, it stands to reason we could be in for a larger display size. Whereas the Droid Razr offers consumers a 4.3-inch qHD screen, … Read more

Friday Poll: What's the best gadget of 2011?

It's end-of-the-year roundup time, when we marshal the power of hindsight and judge all of the tech products that came out in 2011. There were some obvious groaners (hello, HP Veer), but plenty of winners, too.

This is a whopper of a poll. The choices are all culled from the hardware that made CNET's list of the top tech of the year.

There is some stiff competition here. The iPad 2 has been cooking up millions of sales, but Amazon's Kindle Fire has muscled onto the scene in a big way.

The iPhone 4S landed on both the winners and disappointments lists. Will that stop if from coming out tops in the poll? … Read more

Verizon to launch white Droid Razr on December 15

Looks like the white phone craze has just hit Motorola's Droid Razr, Verizon's ultrathin Android superphone. The carrier has announced that it will offer up a white version of the handset for $299.99 with a two-year contract, on sale December 15.

While it doesn't come cheap, for the same price of the all-black model, Android fans can tote a distinctively styled phone to match the holiday season.

We love the original Droid Razr with its lovely 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen, 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, and swift 4G LTE data speeds. I'm sure Android nuts … Read more

Motorola details Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade process

Every time the Android team unveils a new version of the platform, users immediately start asking when they will see the update on their respective hardware.

Of course, the question is quite understandable. It doesn't matter whether your smartphone or tablet is one week old or one year old, we want the hot new Android and we want it now. So we wait. And we wait. And we wait.

Unfortunately, a firm release date, not to mention an answer as to why it takes so long, usually isn't available. That's why I'm glad that Motorola has … Read more

Droid Razrs pop up for free, on sale, and rooted

Motorola has resurrected the Razr as a Droid-branded smartphone, and it's popping up all over--on sale today only at Amazon, given away for free to some old-school Razr owners, and it's even been rooted already.

If you've always had a smartphone, you may have missed out on the mid-2000s feature-phone phenomenon that was the Motorola Razr. That's Razr as in a razor-thin flip phone that sold more than 130 million units in its four-year run.

Motorola brought the best seller back, mixed it all up with its Droid line of smartphones and released the Droid Razr today, 11/11/11, at 11:11 a.m. Apparently everyone is playing this cute little numbers game, including Amazon, which is offering a today-only deal on the new Razr through its AmazonWireless site. The deal gives you the new gadget for just, you guessed it, $111.11 with a Verizon contract--that's a big discount off the regular $299.99 price from Verizon.… Read more

The skinny on big-screen smartphones

If you're eyeing a Samsung Galaxy Note but worry whether its 5.3-inch display makes it "pocketable," we've got you covered.

We put five powerful smartphones--the Droid Razr (4.3-inch), the Galaxy Nexus (4.65-inch), the HTC Sensation XL (4.7-inch), the Dell Streak (5-inch), and the Samsung Galaxy Note--to a pocket test.

Unfortunately, our mobile phone reviewer Aloysius wears (relatively) baggy jeans, so if your wardrobe only consists of skinnies, this might not apply.

See if these phones are a comfortable fit for you, then let us know your ideal handset size in the comments below.

Amazon Wireless selling Droid Razr for $111.11

Amazon is turning the Droid Razr up to 11.

It's no secret that Verizon Wireless is having a little fun with the Motorola Droid Razr's launch date by releasing it exactly on 11:11 a.m. local time on November 11, 2011 (That's 11/11/11. Get it?). But Amazon Wireless, a specialized Amazon store dedicated to all things mobile, is taking it a step further by pricing the phone not at $299.99, but at $111.11 instead. … Read more

How are you celebrating 11/11/11?

One of my proudest moments happened a few years back, when I met Nigel Tufnel's instrument flight case backstage at a Chris Isaak show. For me, 11/11/11 is a day of celebration of Spinal Tap's earnest, but not-too-bright, lead guitarist. He's famous for having a special amp with a volume knob that goes up to 11, one louder than the typical 10.

Tomorrow, I'm turning my amp up to 11 in his honor.

11/11/11 is also the launch day for Motorola's new Droid Razr on Verizon. The Android smartphone will go on sale at 11:11 in the morning. At least you'll never forget the exact moment you bought your new cell phone.… Read more

New Droid Razr ad slices destructively

Yesterday, I was watching some football match when, during a commercial break, I heard a strange slicing motion.

It was the sort of thing you hear in the movies before a severed head rolls along the sidewalk, with bulging, stunned eyes.

Oddly, when I looked up, the Droid Razr was responsible for the mayhem.… Read more
