Mobile app maker Handmark to aquire FreeRange

Handmark announced Thursday plans to acquire FreeRange Communications, in a move to expand its mobile applications to include a publishing platform.

FreeRange, based in Portland, Ore., markets a mobile publishing platform that aims to allow media and content publishers the ability to create a branded channel on a mobile device.

With the acquisition, Handmark is also looking to add FreeRange's RSS Web reading capabilities to its mobile offerings.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The companies expect to complete the transaction in the coming weeks, following shareholder approvals.

Ethanol firms clear deals for non-food feedstocks

Two companies trying to lay claim to having the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in the U.S. have secured financing to get closer to that goal.

Range Fuels on Monday said that it expects to receive an $80 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to build an ethanol plant in Soperton, Ga.

The plant, which will use wood chips from neighborhood pine forests as feedstock, is on track to begin producing next year.

Range Fuels uses a thermo-chemical process called gasification where chips are converted into a synthetic gas and then made into ethanol.

Chrysler gets into electric car race

Struggling automaker Chrysler on Tuesday unveiled a line of electric cars scheduled to start shipping at the end of 2010.

The surprise announcement brings Chrysler in direct competition with General Motors, which last week showed off the Chevy Volt, an extended-range electric car also due in late 2010.

Chrysler's plans call for two electric cars, using the same concept as the Volt and two other all-electric cars.
