HTC co-opts Microsoft's Windows Phone name for 8X, 8S

HTC pulled the curtain back on its Windows Phone 8X and 8S smartphones, the latest takes on Microsoft's upcoming mobile platform.

It's shaping up to be an aggressive launch for Windows Phone 8, which already has the backing of Samsung, Nokia, and now HTC. The phones are expected to debut in November, following closely behind the launch of the desktop and tablet operating system Windows 8.

It's an illustration of Microsoft's confidence in HTC that the Windows Phone name will actually be used as the name of its devices, perhaps dampening Nokia's claim to being the "real" Windows Phone devices. … Read more

HTC teases new device on eve of announcement

HTC has taken to Facebook and Twitter to begin teasing a new product less than 24 hours before its debut.

To tease its followers, HTC paired the above image with the phrase "When beautiful hardware meets stunning software." Looks great, right, but what is it? At last check, it could be one of a number of devices, including an Android smartphone or two Android-based tablets.… Read more

Episode 14: HTC One X vs iPhone in a midair Road Test

This week, you finally get to see the results of my high-flying Road Test of the HTC One X! I actually jumped out of a helicopter because we were so sure that this HTC One X commercial, touting its camera features to such an extent that it could be used in a midair fashion shoot, was a ridiculous put-on. You'll see in the segment whether I managed to get the shot, and whether the phone's camera and features performed as advertised.

Special thanks to the folks at GoPro, who helped us set up this shoot and loaned us … Read more

5-inch HTC phablet tipped to be Droid Incredible X

Move over Samsung and LG, there's new evidence that HTC may be readying a "phablet" of its own for Verizon.

According to a trusted insider close to HTC Source, the smartphone is slated to boast a 5-inch 1080p HD display with a screen resolution of 1794 x 1080 and a ludicrous 480 pixels per inch (ppi). Inside it will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and boast other top features.

Before going any further, I have to address the handset's name, which is reported to be DIx, which is short for Droid Incredible X. That makes … Read more

Monday's tech news roundup is bringing the snacks:

People are already in line for the iPhone 5 at the iconic Apple store in New York City. They lined up eight days before it launches on Sept. 21. What does the iPhone 5 mean to Android? Not a lot

As it usually does, Apple got the tech world excited this week when it introduced its new iPhone 5.

The magically, magnificent device will be an experience like no other and will provide consumers a 4-inch display and 4G LTE connectivity. In other words, stuff that Android phones have enjoyed for the better part of two years. That is, of course, unless you get a Sprint or Verizon iPhone 5 and want to use simultaneous voice and data.

In all seriousness, though, the new iPhone will be a good step forward for Apple as it does improve upon the existing … Read more

Rumor Has It: The anti-iPhone 5 episode

Well, the iPhone event finally happened, and now we have nothing to talk about.

Just kidding!

We decided that everyone must be sick of talking about the new iPhone, so we did everyone a favor -- including ourselves -- and talked about everything but that. Hallelujah!

On this week's show, we continue to not care about HTC's possible tablets; we talk to TechCrunch's favorite sources and learn that a browser-based version of Spotify might be in the works; and on Thursday we will finally learn Wii U pricing and its release date -- that's almost two … Read more

Apple outshines Samsung on mobile ad network

Apple continues to be the industry's top device maker, at least in the number of ad impressions recorded by Millennial Media for its September Mobile Mix report.

For the second quarter of 2012, Apple took home a leading 31 percent of all ad impressions (the number of times an ad is displayed). The iPhone retained its top spot among the top 20 handsets, accounting for almost 16 percent of all impressions.

Samsung captured 22 percent of all impressions to win second place among the top 15 phone makers. The company saw eight of its phones on the top 20 … Read more
