How to root your Samsung Galaxy S3

Note: This process was done using the U.K. version of the S3. We haven't yet rooted the U.S. version, and using this process on a U.S. version could damage your phone.

So you've just bagged yourself a gleaming new Samsung Galaxy S3 and you already want to root around in Android's murky depths? Step this way, friend, and let me take you through the process.

If you think of your phone as a computer, rooting it is like being given administrator rights; you can edit and mess around with things that normally would be … Read more

Testing the fastest Samsung Galaxy S3 of them all

While the Samsung Galaxy S III (S3) looks identical across all four major U.S. carriers, data speeds are anything but equal. I've been testing GS3 phones on one carrier or another for over a month now, and was curious which one gave me the fastest and which the most consistent speeds -- and if the two were the same.… Read more

Galaxy S3 bumps Samsung's lead over Apple, say analysts

Samsung continues to increase its dominance over Apple in the smartphone arena, thanks largely to the launch of its latest Galaxy S handset.

For more than a year, the two companies have been dueling for the bigger chunk of the smartphone market, with Samsung the winner more often than not. But analysts polled by Reuters say that Samsung's lead increased even further last quarter.

Boosted by heavy demand for its new Galaxy S3, Samsung likely sold around 50 million smartphones in the second quarter, according to the 41 analysts surveyed. That figure would easily surpass the 30.5 million … Read more

Koreans flock to Galaxy S3 at Samsung showroom

SEOUL, South Korea -- Samsung's Galaxy S3 LTE hit stores in South Korea a few days ago, and the phone's popularity was plain to see at the tech giant's store here in the Gangnam district of Seoul.

Koreans swarmed around the oversized handset at the flagship Samsung D'light Shop, which is roughly equivalent to Apple stores.

The quad-core phone debuted on Korean carriers KT, LG U+, and SK Telecom this week. Samsung apparently sold 50,000 units on its first day.

Staff at the Samsung store say the phone's selling points are its battery life and speed, LTE support, and features like the ability to show a video feed in one window while using other functions. … Read more

My 4 weeks with the Samsung Galaxy S3 (so far)

Over the last four weeks, I've reviewed the Samsung Galaxy S III (GS3) on four different carriers, thoroughly tested its camera, and dove into its beaming and voice search features. Suffice it to say, I feel like I know the phone pretty well.

The blue T-Mobile version has been a constant companion for over a month, and in between the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean release on Google's I/O-issued Galaxy Nexus and other handset reviews, I've tried to make the GS3 my primary phone. On the whole, it has performed reliably whenever I need it, and … Read more

iSkin ships new Aura and Vibes cases for Samsung Galaxy S3

The Samsung Galaxy S3 accessories keep rolling out, and iSkin's getting in on the GS3 action with its Aura and Vibes lines of cases.

For its Vibes line ($29.99), which comes in multiple colors, iSkin touts its Microban antimicrobial protection, which "helps prevent the growth of bacteria that can cause stains and odors." I'm not sure I've ever had a smartphone case with a B.O. problem, but hey, it makes for good marketing.

While I haven't tried out the Vibes on the S3, I did check out the Aura ($39.99), which … Read more

New Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 has unlocking bootloader

Now here's an interesting twist to the story of the Samsung Galaxy S III (S3) on Verizon. Samsung has just announced that it'll sell a version of its flagship Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone for Verizon that features an unlockable bootloader.

This means that the Galaxy S III Developer Edition, as its called, will open the door for developers and enthusiasts to tinker around on their phones, as in to install custom ROMs. Verizon's version of the Galaxy S3 is the only one whose bootloader isn't unlockable by default; phone owners can unlock the … Read more

Universal search reportedly vanishes from Galaxy S3

As Apple and Samsung spar over universal search in the new Galaxy Nexus, it appears Samsung has quietly removed the feature from the Galaxy S3 in an effort to keep the new smartphones on retailers' shelves.

Soon after a U.S. judge denied Samsung's request earlier this month to suspend a ban on U.S. sales of its Galaxy Nexus phone over a patent spat with Apple, Google said it was already working on a patch to address the issue. However, while that patch hasn't materialized, it appears Google has gone on the defensive by removing the offending … Read more

Episode 4: Torture-testing the Samsung Galaxy S3

I think we're starting to get better at this torture-test thing, which is bad news for gadgets.

In preparing to test the Samsung Galaxy S3, I decided the oven we used for the iPad test didn't seem quite right. So I set about trying to devise a new heat contraption that would simulate the baking hot interior of a car parked in the sun, or the heat of the sun on a phone sitting out on the beach, or a similar real-life heat test.

At first, I was on the hunt for some kind of a heat-proof box … Read more

Samsung Galaxy S3 arrives at U.S. Cellular July 11

Starting tomorrow, U.S. Cellular will begin selling the Samsung Galaxy S III (S3) (reviewed here for T-Mobile), first online, and then in stores later this week.

The 16GB version will carry a $199.99 price tag, and will be immediately available, with the 32GB version to follow "shortly after that" for $249.99 -- both after $100 mail-in rebates

U.S. Cellular recommends that customers contact stores before going in, since some brick and mortars will receive shipments on Friday, and some will get their GS3s beforehand.
