Boston Power plans battery plant for cars, laptops

Battery company Boston Power thinks it can bring electric car battery manufacturing to the U.S. with some help from government stimulus funds.

The Westborough, Mass.-based company on Monday is scheduled to hold a press event in nearby Auburn where it plans to build a factory to make lithium-ion batteries for laptops and electric vehicles.

Construction of the facility, which used to be a distribution center for a clothing retailer, is contingent on a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's advanced battery and cell manufacturing grant program.

Beaver-tailed robot mimics tree-climbing insects

Here's another offering from Boston Dynamics' zoomorphic line: the RiSE V3, a multi-legged, beaver-tailed robot that can skitter along the ground, shimmy up a pole, and then quietly cling there and stare at you.

The legs are powered by a pair of electric motors and equipped with small surgical needle micro-claws, which allow the unit to dig into and climb up textured, convex, cylindrical structures at a rate of 21 centimeters per second, or just under a half a mile an hour (PDF).

"RiSE V3 is the first general-purpose legged machine to achieve this vertical climbing speed," … Read more

The Erotic Services section of Craigslist Boston is still full of advertisers vying for attention with exclamation points, heart symbols, stars, and even percentage signs.

However, one ad, posted late Thursday, offered a sober reminder of what happened in Boston over the previous week.

Headlined: "Were You Attacked or Robbed by a Client? (Boston)", the ad asks for further potential victims of the alleged killer who preyed on women through Craigslist to come forward.

Alleged Craigslist killer: Plastic handcuffs found

Philip Markoff, suspected of killing a woman he met through Craigslist at a Boston hotel, appeared in court Thursday to face charges of murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping.

As he did, Boston police began to reveal more details of a crime that seems to have shocked many for the very sad reason that Mr. Markoff doesn't conform to the supposed image of what a killer should be and look like.

District Attorney Daniel Conley said Tuesday: "He probably thought he was going to get away with it. He thought he was too smart for us."

Boston hotels wary of Craigslist-lurking killer

Boston police believe that the killer of a masseuse on Tuesday night at the Marriott Copley Place may have been involved in several other incidents and that he may have selected his victims on Craigslist.

In the latest incident Thursday night, a woman who advertised her as yet unstated services on Craigslist was bound and held at gunpoint at the Holiday Inn Express.

Her description of her attacker appears to match that of a "person of interest" in the murder of masseuse Julissa Brisman, who also advertised her massage services on Craigslist, at the Marriott Copley Place on … Read more

HP now sells Boston Power Enviro laptop batteries

Hewlett Packard on Monday said that its long-lasting Enviro laptop batteries from Boston Power are available with a three-year warranty.

The batteries costs $149.99 and fit 18 of HP's laptops. They can be purchased online now and will be available in stories later this month.

HP has branded Boston Power's Sonata batteries under the Enviro name to emphasize the environmental attributes. With a longer-lasting battery, consumers need to upgrade less often, which reduces the number of batteries that need to be recycled, HP said in a statement.

Last year, an HP representative estimated the Enviro line costs … Read more
