Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, surround-sound music looked like the next big thing, but in the intervening decade and a half, precious little rock, jazz, or world music has been recorded in surround. True, in the early days of SACD and DVD-Audio formats there were hundreds of remixes of older stereo recordings, and some were recycled on Blu-ray, but the number of newly recorded 5.1 titles remains paltry. Looking back, the early 2000s should have been an ideal time to launch surround music; multichannel home theater was peaking, so there was a large number of households … Read more
As the Sochi Winter Olympics officially kick off this week, we're checking out some of the same technology Olympic organizers are relying on to generate snow at a resort in Lake Tahoe. These automated snowmaking systems (some of which can even be operated from a mobile phone) are making it easier and more efficient to make snow when Mother Nature doesn't want to cooperate.
Prizefight is also back at it with an epic rematch between the Roku 3 and third-generation Apple TV. It's been a year since their previous duel and both Editors' Choice streaming boxes have … Read more
Google's latest flagship smartphone is a force to be reckoned with, and while it may not have all the bells and whistles as some of its competitors, CNET senior editor Brian Bennett just can't seem to put his down. The Nexus 5 is equipped with a beautiful 4.95-inch full HD 1080p display, a speedy 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and a capable 8-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization.
Apple risks falling behind in display tech in 2014, DisplayMate Technologies said in a research note.
Echoing an earlier note, DisplayMate Technologies Raymond Soneira said this week that "Apple has recently given up the lead in displays -- now Amazon, Google, LG, and Samsung are launching products with the best and most innovative displays."
He cited the example of an emerging LCD technology called Quantum Dots that Amazon has tapped for the Kindle Fire HDX 7 (now $199 at Amazon).
"Quantum Dots are going to revolutionize and reenergize LCDs for the next 5+ years," he wrote. &… Read more
Samsung's Siri competitor, S Voice, is set for an overhaul, according to a new report.
Sammobile on Wednesday published photos of what it claims is the new-and-improved S Voice app. The app, which allows users to employ their voices to make commands, comes with a two-tone blue design and an interface that embraces flat design -- i.e., simple and minimalistic.
The leaked images come just after Sammobile showed off updated versions of Samsung's S Health and WatchOn apps. All three apps are expected to come with the rumored Galaxy S5.

Like it or not, the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 is set to usher in the era of ultra HD smartphone screens.
The Galaxy S5 won't be the first mobile handset to showcase a 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution -- that honor belongs to the Vivo Xplay 3S -- but it will be the handset that draws the most attention, at least initially. And part of that conversation will revolve around just how necessary, even useful, it is to top a phone with a screen resolution so high.
Apple has long stood by the 326ppi pixel density of its Retina Display … Read more

However, the new shade has gone official now that users can purchase it at the Play Store.
It's still available unlocked for $349 (16GB) and $399 (32GB). Other colors include black and white, and Google sells phone bumpers in gray, yellow, … Read more
