Ask Maggie: Will AT&T ax T-Mobile phones?

The $39 billion proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile USA won't close for at least a year, but some T-Mobile customers are worried about what the potential changes might mean for them.

In this week's Ask Maggie column, I clear up confusion around whether T-Mobile USA customers will be forced to upgrade their handsets after AT&T completes its acquisition. I also offer my prediction on whether new LTE smartphones that will be introduced later this year will have similar battery life issues to the HTC Thunderbolt. And I offer some advice to new iPad2 … Read more

Ask Maggie: On the future of Nokia's N8, feature phones, and real keyboards

I am asked all the time by readers, friends, and family members to offer my predictions on what I think is coming in the mobile market, as if I have some crystal ball hidden in my office.

It's true that I follow this market closely, but I must admit that I did not go to the Hogwarts School of Wizadry. And as such I have no crystal ball hidden anywhere to give me the answers.

That said, I am happy to offer my best guess based on what I know and have seen in the market. So with that … Read more

Microsoft CEO: Mobile is all about the platform

BARCELONA--The battle for the mobile consumer is no longer about who has the coolest device, but rather who has the most compelling ecosystem. That's the message from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who took the stage to kick off this year's Mobile World Congress.

A year ago, Ballmer was here to launch the company's revamped mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7. This year, devices with the OS have been on the market for four months, and the company has about 8,000 apps in its market. Microsoft also just announced a partnership with the world's largest phone … Read more

Nokia CEO makes the case for Microsoft deal

BARCELONA - Nokia CEO Stephen Elop used the company's Mobile World Congress press conference here to pitch Nokia's new partnership with Microsoft.

Nokia, which typically launches a bevy of products at Mobile World Congress every year, had no new products to announce. Instead, Elop took the stage here this evening to highlight the benefits of Nokia's new strategy to make Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 its predominant mobile platform. Is the Nokia-Microsoft deal a prelude to a merger?

Nokia and Microsoft have inextricably hitched their wagons to each other in the mobile market. Could this be a precursor to a mega technology merger?

Rumors of a Nokia-Microsoft merger first percolated last year, even before former Microsoft executive Stephen Elop took the reins at the troubled cell phone giant. And while many expected the company to at least be in discussions with Microsoft over a potential partnership, few had predicted the tight relationship announced in London this morning.

During a press conference at its annual investor meeting, the Nokia CEO and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer announced that Nokia will ditch its Symbian and Meego operating systems for Microsoft Windows Phone 7. … Read more

Dear Stephen Elop: Suggestions for saving Nokia

To: Nokia CEO Stephen Elop Re: Nokia's turnaround

Dear Stephen:

It's clear from your "burning platform" memo--where you compared Nokia to a man on an oil platform in the North Sea who wakes to explosions and fire, but who survives after choosing to leap into the icy sea--that you're upset. And I don't blame you.

While Nokia is still the No.1 seller of mobile handsets in the world, its lead is quickly eroding, especially at the high end of the market. Research firm Gartner reported today that smartphone sales rose 72 percent … Read more
