Going.com partners with BuyYourFriendADrink

One of my most memorable career moments thus far was the "road test" of BuyYourFriendADrink.com (BYFAD), in which I took a midday field trip to a neighborhood bar to test out the service (which does exactly what its name implies it will do, via text message). It worked like a charm, but a few of us continued to wonder how a limited and somewhat gimmicky site could survive--especially since it has yet to expand outside a set of 60 bars in New York City and the surrounding metro area.

Well, now we have an inkling of an … Read more

Cell phones are for drinkers

Last week we discovered a Japanese cell phone dangle that resembled a golden turd. Today, thanks to Gizmodo, we found something even better. This drunken salaryman dangle comes in a few delicious versions. Our favorite has to be the one with the man bowing to the "porcelain god." But other options, such as the guy passed out with his bottle or the dude dancing with his shirt off, aren't bad either. And for more aggressive after-work party types, there's a rather stern fellow who looks like he's got a shiner on his head. The Web … Read more

Photos: Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S

How many times have you dropped your phone in the bathroom? Even if you haven't, you probably know someone who has. I have a friend who has dropped her phone in the bathroom at least five times, and each time she's had to find a replacement. If you're a klutz, you'll love the Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S. Not only is it water-resistant, it's military-tested to be shock- and dust-resistant as well. In short, this thing is as tough as nails. It's a little smaller and appears more streamlined than its big brother, the … Read more

What the iPhone commercials tell us

Apple iPhone watchers breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday when TV commercials shown during 60 Minutes revealed the June 29 release date at long last. From our perspective we don't know what's better--finally putting an end to five months of rumors or actually getting more information about a cell phone that has sent people into hysterics (yes, I'm including Crave in that group).

Though the commercials didn't tell us much more than what we already know, they do let us get a look at the device in action. Here's what we saw.

Ringtone roundup: Top 5 are frozen in time

Each week, Crave tracks the most popular ringtones.

For all we know, the top five ringtones may be cemented in place for all of eternity. The same 10 ringtones make up the top 10 this week, except a few have switched places.

See the full Billboard ringtone chart right here.

Unk's "2 Step" holds on to the top spot and will presumably do so until everyone in America has downloaded it. Then, we'll all be confused whenever a phone rings, because everyone will have the same ringtone.

Elsewhere on the charts, Koji Kondo's "Super … Read more

Slide show roundup: Transformers, Eclipse AVN2210p, and Windows Home Server

We look at cool, modern Transformers toys; a GPS device that does so much, it required four CNET editors to test it; a preview build of Microsoft's Windows Home Server; and two slim phones comprise this photo roundup.

Photos: Transformers Transformers hits the big screen this July 4, and that means there's a whole lot of merchandising going on. Among the hordes of Transformers toys is Hasbro's Real Gear Transformers, a series of toy electronics that turn into robots. Remember Soundwave, the Transformer that became a tape deck? Well, this is the next generation of Transformers. And … Read more

Amp'd Mobile files for bankruptcy protection

You may have seen plenty of ads for Amp'd Mobile both in print and on the silver screen, but it looks like those ads simply weren't making them enough money. Amp'd Mobile, an MVNO targeting the young and urban, has filed for bankruptcy protection last Friday stating that their "back-end infrastructure was unable to keep up with customer demand." MocoNews.net reports that Amp'd Mobile apparently owes Verizon Wireless (the network they're piggybacking on) around $33 million, with several more million owed to other creditors. Ouch. Business is expected to continue as usual, … Read more

LG VX8550 may be available from Verizon

Engadget has recently received news that the LG VX8500 Chocolate slider may be replaced soon with the LG VX8550, which is apparently much easier to use than the Chocolate, with its notoriously hard-to-use navigation pad. As the product images show, the LG VX8550 is slated to be available from Verizon some time soon. We really don't have much to go on other than that, but head on over to their site to check out the pics. We'll keep our eyes peeled for further information.

Virgin Mobile flubs up ads in NYC

Advertisements are part of the landscape here in New York City (hello, Times Square) and us locals generally like to ignore them. Which is why plenty of companies are willing to bend over backwards to get New Yorkers to stop walking really fast while blasting music into their iPod headphones and, well, notice some advertisements. Virgin Mobile's one of the recent ones, having introduced a "You Rule" campaign that addresses specific groups of New Yorkers. It's been placing them in specific neighborhoods, too, in an attempt to gain buzz by delivering personalized shout-outs.
