Instagram's instant billion-dollar payday

week in review Just weeks away from what's expected to be a historic Internet IPO, Facebook announced it had agreed to acquire the hugely popular photo-sharing smartphone app Instagram in a cash and stock deal valued at about $1 billion.

Facebook has made a slew of acquisitions to date, but nothing of this scale. Instagram is a 2-year-old startup that comes with some 33 million users and a growth rate that's the envy of Silicon Valley.

The key win for Facebook here is mobile engagement. The social network has had a mobile app for years, but it doesn'… Read more

Botnet goes on Mac attack

week in review Long thought of as safer than its competition, Apple's Mac platform is battling a nasty piece of malware designed to steal users' personal information.

More than 600,000 Macs worldwide are infected with the Flashback Trojan, according to Russian antivirus company Dr. Web. The malware was initially found in September 2011 masquerading as a fake Adobe Flash Player plug-in installer, but in the past few months it has evolved to exploiting Java vulnerabilities to target Mac systems.

Simply visiting a malicious Web site containing Flashback on an OS X system with Java installed can result in … Read more

Violations found at Foxconn factories

week in review Violations in wages and overtime were found at Foxconn during an independent audit of the Chinese manufacturing giant.

The Fair Labor Association's audit of Foxconn, which was posted to the FLA's Web site Thursday, found all three factories in the region to be in violation of both the labor organization's code standard and Chinese law in hours worked by employees. The FLA said these factories "exceeded" 60 hours per worker, which Foxconn has now said will be scaled back to 49 hours per week by July 1, 2013.

New iPad momentarily loses its cool

week in review Apple kicked off the week on a roll, announcing it sold 3 million iPads over the weekend, not counting preorders. That handily beat previous iPad launches, and put the debut of the third-generation device close to the launch of the iPhone 4S last year, from a sales perspective.

Following that announcement, and news that the company will tap its $100 billion cash pile by paying a regular dividend to stockholders, Apple stock hit the $600 mark and finished above it for the first time.

But things started to heat up amid reports, including one from influential Consumer … Read more

Apple's new iPad hits the streets

week in review Eager iPad shoppers mobbed stores around the world in hopes of getting their hands on Apple's next-generation tablet, which is already sold out online.

Wal-Mart's 24-hour stores in the U.S. got the jump on Apple by selling the tablet a full eight hours before Apple stores even opened. There was limited supply, however. For example, dozens of people lined up at a Wal-Mart in Union City, Calif., which had 40 iPads to sell. And many left disappointed.

At Apple's Fifth Avenue store in New York City, hundreds of iPad fans waited in the … Read more
