A printer for people who work while bathing

Some cynical types might question the need for a waterproof printer, but we think the reason is obvious: What else would one use to print from an underwater monitor after having received a deep-sea text message with links to undersea videos taken while listening to a scuba-diving MP3 player?

No, this 3-inch printer from South Korea's Woosim doesn't make sense to us either, as described by Red Ferret, but neither do a lot of other aquatic electronics. It's also not clear whether the device is submersible but, given the demand for other underwater gear, that probably wouldn'… Read more

iRiver's scuba-friendly MP3 player

Waterproof MP3 players aren't novel anymore, but this iRiver iFP-380T system caught our eye not just for its rather unusual design but because it can go scuba diving with you. This device lets you take your music not just into water, but up to 200 feet deep in it.

The full kit comes with the player as well as its waterproof case and headset. A removable clip helps keep the single headphone securely fastened to the strap of the scuba mask. It's a pity that this can store only about 30 songs with its limited 128MB storage, but … Read more

Olympus drops perfectly good cameras into the drink

Correction 7:50 a.m. PST: The lower-end model is the Stylus 850 SW.

LAS VEGAS--I can't speak for their optical quality or performance, but I like the idea behind Olympus' shockproof and waterproof compact cameras--and I liked the publicity stunts the Japanese camera maker used to show them off at the Photo Marketing Association trade show here.

In one demonstration, the camera drops down a pegboard, banging off several on the way down before splashing into a tray of water.

On another, a handful of cameras were frozen in a large block of ice.

And several cameras were … Read more

The latest 57-inch HDTV--for the bathroom

Every day sees more evidence that people are spending their entire lives in the bathroom. Take TVs, for example: No longer is it unusual to find a waterproof flat screen situated above the sink, in the shower, or pretty much anywhere else one can imagine (which we'd rather not, thank you).

Instead, it's become a question of how big the bathroom TV is. And Aquavision has an answer, to the tune of a 57-inch LCD in full 1080p HD glory, according to Dvice, with a reflective screen that serves as a mirror when turned off.

All this is … Read more

Fujitsu claims thinnest waterproof phone

There's one constant in the gadget world: The minute you post an item that claims to have set a new record for being the smallest or thinnest fill-in-the-blank, someone will immediately dispute it. (The point was proven once again in discussions stemming from the MacBook Air.)

So the only thing we dare say is that, as of this writing, Akihabara News is reporting what it calls "the slimmest waterproof phone ever made." The 3G handset in question is the Fujitsu F705i, which measures 13.7 millimeters thick, or about 0.54 inches.

There are most certainly other … Read more

iPod speakers that are made for snorkling

If you can't afford a media-laden ocean cruiser but still enjoy your music by (or in) the sea, here's a modest alternative.

Ego is coming out with a waterproof iPod case that, unlike countless other water-resistant models, includes a set of speakers that stays dry too. The "iceBar2" is an updated version of a case introduced last year to fit the latest Nano.

And unlike speakers that are meant for bathroom dwellers and the like, this one and its shatterproof polycarbonate case can be submerged in up to 3 meters of water, according to Coolest-Gadgets, which … Read more

Panasonic SW20 takes a soaking and keeps on shooting

Panasonic just revealed a new waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof compact camcorder at today's CES press conference. According to Panasonic, the new SW20 can handle dunks in up to 5 feet of water, drops from up to 4 feet, and will keep most dust out of its pint-size, colorful casing.

Though Panasonic has been producing its rugged Toughbooks for several years now, its camcorders have had this persistent quirk of breaking if you drop them several feet or submerge them in water. The SW20 is the first rugged, waterproof camcorder I've seen so far from Panasonic (last year's … Read more

Waterproof MP3 radio shuns corners

Something of a novelty only a year ago, devices that waterproof the iPod are almost too many to count today. But we're willing to give credit to the "iConcepts Shower Radio" for originality of design if nothing else.

The oval-shaped dock will work with other MP3 players as well, according to 7Gadgets, as long as they fit in the space behind the mirror. But in case you have any thoughts of using it as a Christmas tree ornament, be aware that it weighs 3 pounds. If you paint it green, though, it might pass for toy grenade.… Read more

Waterproof TVs go portable

There's an abundance of waterproof TVs on the market, for both outdoor and indoor use. But there are suprisingly few handheld entertainment devices that can resist the rain, considering that they're actually supposed to get wet.

Sanyo has the right idea, though, with a waterproof portable TV that has a 4-inch LCD and a six-hour battery, according to Gizmodiva. That, of course, is tiny compared with other weather-resistant models we've seen. Then again, not everyone needs one for an entire life in the bathroom.

The latest TV combo: waterproof and mirrors

There are a number of TVs on the market that are waterproof and others that have mirrored screens, but now we have one that combines both. The "Luxurite Wireless Waterproof TV" is a high-definition set that comes in 17 or 19 inches with an optional mirrored finish that appears when it's turned off. The U.K.-made TV can be used outdoors as well as indoors, Trendir says, and its remote is waterproof as well--but you'll pay the price for that durability, to the tune of $4,161. Even though it would be perfect by the … Read more
