Samsung GS4 ad shows how to hold baby and watch LeBron

This is perhaps an even greater philosophical question than: "Why do some people consider cheerleading a sport?"

For today we must consider how to hold a baby and watch the NBA Finals at the same time.

Should we turn on our televisions and hold the baby with both arms? Or does modern man hold his large-screened cell phone in one hand, while cradling baby in the other?

Samsung has a position on this. For its new Galaxy S4 ad insists on the latter pose as the ideal for both man and baby.

Samsung trumps Apple in U.S. smartphone share, analyst says

Samsung's share of the U.S. smartphone market topped Apple's last month for the first time since the iPhone 5 launched, analysts at investment bank Canaccord Genuity say, thanks to greater supply of Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones and sales stoked by lower pricing for Galaxy S III and Note 2.

With prices on Apple's iPhone 4/4S reined in as well, overall smartphone sales improved in May compared to the prior month, according to the firm's monthly wireless store surveys.

Samsung takes the mantle a little later than Canaccord had estimated, as the S4 rolled out … Read more

Apple still smartphone champ, Android the No. 1 OS, ComScore says

Research firm ComScore has released its latest U.S. smartphone industry report, estimating that Apple remains top of the pile in the smartphone industry with a market share of 39.2 percent.

Based on data gathered through the company's MobiLens service -- which harvests user information based on subscribers 13 years and older -- ComScore says that in the three month period ended April 2013, Apple and South Korean rival Samsung were the only manufacturers that enjoyed a positive increase in market share values.

Tech giant Apple managed to snag 39.2 percent of U.S. smartphone … Read more

Apple would survive ban on older iPhones, iPads, says analyst

Sure, Samsung won a victory over Apple when a judge imposed a limited sales ban on older iPhones and iPads. But Apple would survive such a ban virtually unscathed, according to Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster.

Tuesday's ruling by the U.S. International Trade Commission found Apple guilty of infringing on certain Samsung cellular technology patents. Assuming the ruling stands, a ban on the infringing devices would halt sales of the AT&T models of the iPhone 4 and 3GS and the 3G versions of the first and second iPad.

A ban on most of those devices would … Read more

Galaxy S4 Active takes a waterproof tack

Samsung's long-rumored Galaxy S4 Active has entered the realm of officialdom at last, and will be out in the U.K. this summer, Samsung has confirmed.

The S4 Active is a rugged version of the regular S4, aimed at outdoorsy types who don't want a phone that'll faint at the first sight of dust or water. The phone has a sealed design that -- Samsung promises -- will protect the S4 Active from water damage for up to 30 minutes of submergence at a depth of one meter.

More than enough protection against dropping it in your … Read more

Apple faces ban on older iPhones, iPads after legal defeat

Several older Apple iPhone and iPad models infringe on a patent held by Samsung, a judge at the U.S. International Trade Commission said on Tuesday.

In a final ruling (PDF), the ITC said Apple infringes on a Samsung patent related to cellular technology with AT&T models of the iPhone 3GS and 4, along with 3G models of the iPad 1 and 2.

As part of the ruling, the ITC has issued a limited order to bar those devices from sale in the U.S.

The decision is final, however Apple can appeal it to the Federal Circuit, … Read more

In new S4 ad, Samsung replaces iPhone jokes with a fart joke

You can never go wrong with babies.

Well, except in the case of those people who should never have one.

It seems, therefore, that someone at Samsung has decided -- now that the company has reached the America-centric stage of its Galaxy S4 launch -- not to tread on sexual toes.

You might remember that the company likes to begin its American phase with an ad or two suggesting the iPhone is but an attractive doorstop. This Samsung did a few weeks ago with its pool party ad -- the one with the clueless iPhone-owning parents.

So now it's time to step into familial, non-critical territory.… Read more
