Verizon readies software update for Droid Razr Maxx, Droid Razr

No doubt Droid Razr Maxx owners are still enjoying that new handset smell. That hasn't stopped Motorola from gearing up fresh software for the long-lasting smartphone.

Verizon's support page explains that Big Red has an update in the works for the Droid Razr Maxx, along with its predecessor the Droid Razr. Looking at the details Verizon provided for the software, 6.12.173.XT912.Verizon.en.US., it looks like the promised changes (PDF) are meant to address minor bugs. Still, I'm sure Maxx and Razr lovers will take it and run. … Read more

It's time to kiss that removable smartphone battery goodbye

What do the iPhone, Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, and Nokia Lumia 900 have in common? The fact that their batteries can't easily be removed.

Last week, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx wowed us with its slim physique and a long battery life that nearly doubled that of the original Droid Razr. The one component that made it possible is the unremovable--or embedded--battery.

Cell phones with batteries you can't pop out are more common than you may think. Apple has made embedded batteries a mainstay in every iPhone since its first.

In fact, add up the iPhones, both Droid Razrs, two Nokia Lumias (800 and 900), and the upcoming Motorola Droid 4 and it appears we have a trend on our hands.… Read more

The Motorola Droid Razr should have gone Maxx to start with

commentary The birth of the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx's extra-large battery may have been unintended, but it shouldn't have been.

Motorola's stars aligned, CNET learned, when an engineer began experimenting with a thicker, but more muscular battery than what's in the original Droid Razr. Moto's CEO Sanjay Jha loved it, Verizon came around, and as a result, the Droid Razr Maxx goes on sale today for $300, just months after the otherwise nearly-identical Droid Razr hit shelves in November.

The battery capacity and resulting thickness truly are the two devices' only differences. Where the Droid … Read more

Massive Motorola Droid Razr Maxx battery a 'Eureka' moment

Verizon and Motorola may boast that the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, on sale beginning today, has a boosted battery capable of lasting a full day and night. What they won't tell you is that the Razr Maxx was an accident.

A Motorola engineer was playing with the idea of packing on a higher capacity battery onto the original Motorola Droid Razr, CEO Sanjay Jha told CNET at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, when Jha got his hands on it.

While the Razr Maxx is slightly thicker than the Droid Razr (0.35-inch at its middle versus 0.28-inch … Read more

Remembering the other Razr Maxx

Thank to a well-timed Verizon Wireless announcement just two weeks after the phone's unveiling, we now know that Motorola's Droid Razr Maxx will arrive in stores this Thursday, January 26.

The new handset has all the powerful features of the well-received Droid Razr while almost doubling the battery to an impressive 21 hours of talk time. I won't refuse more juice in a smartphone, particularly one that's just 0.28 inches thick, but there's no escaping that the Droid Razr Maxx is a recycled version of an existing device. And while that's a bit disappointing, it's also fitting when you consider the handset's name.

Indeed, it was almost five years ago when Moto and Verizon introduced the Razr Maxx Ve. Yes, the "Droid" name was still a few years off, but this Razr Maxx was another child in the very large Razr V3 family. … Read more

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx promises pumped-up battery life

LAS VEGAS--I honestly thought there was little room to improve the ultrathin and very compelling Droid Razr.

Motorola has upped the ante, though, saying it will ship a new version with enhanced battery life, calling it the Droid Razr Maxx.

The original Droid Razr managed to squeeze in a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, gorgeous 4.3-inch Super AMOLED HD-resolution screen, plus 4G LTE radio into its svelte frame. Its one Achilles' heel, though, is the device's battery, which provided decent but not stellar run time. … Read more
