Police told to text to save money

There is something both lovable and just about British policemen.

They roam the streets, dispensing righteousness, without the aid of a gun. Which makes it safer for the average British citizen to know that if they happen to offer a policeman a slurry quip they will not be offed within a nanosecond of the punchline.

However, it seems as if the British police is struggling to make ends meet, technologically speaking. For the Daily Mail solemnly reports that bobbies on the beat are being trained to text to save money.

You see, British policemen have radios attached to their lapels. … Read more

Trailer thief spotted on Google Street View?

Some people in Europe haven't really taken to the slight snoopiness of Google Street View.

And yet, as with so many technological inventions, it occasionally might bring truth and justice to all. At least police in South Derbyshire, England hope so.

For they have released a Google Street View image of a man who appears to be doing his trousers up in someone else's driveway in Linton, Derbyshire. Why anyone should choose to do their trousers up in the middle of someone else's driveway in what appears to be the middle of the day on a sweet, … Read more

Police Blotter: Husband accused of tapping wife's PC

A Texas court has ruled that a husband accused of monitoring his wife's computer through a keystroke logger did not violate federal wiretapping laws.

Larry Bagley was sued in June by his wife Rhea Bagley, who accused him of surreptitiously placing audio recording devices in their house as well as a software keystroke logger. The Bagleys are in the process of divorcing.

The complaint in this civil case says that during the divorce proceedings, the husband revealed the existence of the surveillance tech and acknowledged that the "software recorded screenshots of activity on this computer." The husband … Read more

Teen sends Facebook invite to 15; 21,000 reply

So great is the excitement about a Facebook-branded phone that any privacy issues such a phone might inspire seem to have blown away in the wind.

Let me, therefore, offer a sweet and cautionary tale about a 14-year-old girl in the U.K., who thought she'd throw a little party and now seems to be about to throw a very big one.

The Telegraph has been friendly enough to reveal the Facebook faux-pas performed by the teen. She decided to hold a birthday party at her mom's house and mom kindly said she could invite 15 of her … Read more

European police arrest 10 alleged film pirates

In a coordinated crackdown on Internet movie piracy, police from five European countries arrested a total of 10 people following raids, according to an Associated Press report.

Five of the arrests were made in Belgium, which spearheaded the raids on Tuesday, according to the AP report. Police shut down 48 servers and charged the five suspects in Belgium with computer fraud, hacking, and being members of a criminal organization.

Interestingly, the police told the AP that the suspects, ranging in age from 25 to 30 years old, were not pirating films for their own financial gain, according to the AP. … Read more

Ford builds an SUV for cops

Last March, Ford announced that, with the discontinuation of its Crown Victoria, its new Police Interceptor vehicle would be based on the Taurus. Now, Ford announces a similarly outfitted police vehicle based on the new Explorer.

The Ford Police Interceptor utility offers the same sort of heavy duty brakes, suspension, and engine cooling equipment as the Taurus-based sedan, designed to handle the rigorous duty of police work. The Interceptor utility comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 producing 280 horsepower.

Similar to the sedan, the Interceptor utility gets the Ford Sync system, along with safety features such as blind-spot detection. Unlike … Read more

Chrysler reveals 'sinister' police vehicle

Chrysler released a dark and intimidating image of its police vehicle that goes on sale in September.

It's the police version of the all-new 2011 Dodge Charger equipped with either an E-85 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 or 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with a fuel-saving multidisplacement system. Rear-wheel drive design and a redesigned front and rear multilink suspension deliver a smooth ride, and its two-mode police-specific Electronic Stability Control (ESC) calibration … Read more

Man faces jail for YouTube video of traffic stop

Have you ever been stopped by a police officer and been tempted to whip out one of your fine portable gadgets and film the encounter?

Perhaps you wanted it for posterity, as a lesson to yourself on your own bad behavior. Perhaps you wanted it for humor because the officer had stopped you for walking down a Bronx street with your underpants showing. Or perhaps the officer was in something of an intolerant mood.

It may have been one of these things that drove Anthony Graber, a staff sergeant in the Maryland Air National Guard, to shoot events that followed … Read more

Police to experiment with blinding 'Dazer Laser'?

Perhaps "Don't Dazer Laser me, bro" doesn't quite trip off the tongue. However, police in the Northwest may soon be experimenting with the Dazer Laser, a tool which, well, shoots, blinds, and disorients.

The Dazer Laser is a gun that emits a green light at suspects and causes them to temporarily lose their sight and wonder whether they might have been transported to an alternative galaxy. And, according to King 5 News in Seattle, police in the Northwest might soon be the first to experiment with zapping a green light at a suspected evildoer.

The Dazer Laser, allegedly, has less deleterious side effects than tasers and enjoys a greater distance of use than pepper spray. "You need minimal training. It's not hard to aim a light at somebody," Officer Tom Arnold of the Lakewood Police Department told King 5.

Within the next month, the first 1,000 Dazer Lasers will be ready for action at the the North Carolina factory of Laser Energetics.

But perhaps the most extraordinary claim is that these little babies might be efficacious from not merely 3 feet but up to one and a half miles.… Read more

Facebook refuses to take down tribute page to killer

Raoul Moat used to be the doorman at a nightclub and became famous in the U.K. during the past two weeks because he shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend, shot and killed her new boyfriend, and shot and blinded a policeman.

He then went on the run before, apparently, shooting himself during a stand-off with the police.

His case has aroused many strong feelings in the U.K., many critical, some sympathetic. After his death, a Facebook group was created called "R.I.P. Raoul Moat You Legend!" This quickly attracted more than 36,000 fans, although not … Read more
