Nokia is giving away free annual subscriptions for Netflix to Vodafone customers in the UK, in a bid to build up holiday sales.
The offer was first reported by the Financial Times [subscription required], and a Netflix spokesman confirmed it to CNET.
CNET contacted Nokia for details and will update when we hear more.
Free Netflix subscriptions have been bundled into other device sales before, most notably a recent three-month membership included with purchases of … Read more
Windows Phone now comes in the supersize variety.
The third and latest update from Microsoft, released Monday, brings a number of incremental upgrades and changes to Windows Phone 8. The most crucial of them is support for a higher-resolution display and larger screen sizes, enabling its partners to finally get into the so-called phablet business.
Phablets, a mashup of a phone and tablet, have quietly become a vital part of any handset manufacturer's product lineup. While they remain a niche business in the US, the oversize phones are proving to be popular in regions such as Asia where, it … Read more

Nokia's made a name for itself in manufacturing tough phones, without feeling the need to tack words like "rugged" or "active" to the model name. That being said, it doesn't mean the phones can necessarily handle a good ol' fashioned grape stomping. It's a shame, considering the 41 megapixels of wine tasting the phone is capable of capturing.
Sure, the purple juice, along with an assortment of skins, stems, and water, turned out the lights on the 1020. However, given Nokia's nature, we believe there's a chance it can be revived. … Read more

You, I am sure, will be excited to see parachutists.
I don't want to keep you from this joy. There are lots of wonderful flying people in this ad. Just as there were in a certain Google Glass, um, skydiving stunt.
This is all allegedly shot on a Nokia Lumia 1020 which, I believe, is another great Nokia camera with a nice phone attached.
And there's nothing wrong with that.
I am, however, disturbed by the ending of this piece. For after the descent of the flyers carrying the new phone to Dubai (en route to its destination … Read more
BlackBerry may be in even worse shape than previously thought.
The company is poised to burn through nearly $2 billion in cash over the next six months, putting its liquidity at risk, according to Pierre Ferragu, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein. He downgraded the stock to "underperform" and placed a price target of $4.50 after a deeper analysis of the company's quarterly filing. It last traded at $7.73.
The downgrade represents just the latest setback for a company that is facing an increasingly uncertain fate. With mounting losses and no evidence that its newer BlackBerry … Read more
Samsung executives might have been able to access patent-licensing terms between Apple and Nokia, despite rules disallowing such access.
Foss Patents' Florian Mueller on Thursday published court documents filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California on Wednesday that suggest Samsung might have been inappropriately given access to a patent-licensing deal between Apple and Nokia.
According to the order laid down yesterday by Magistrate Paul Grewal in its ongoing patent-infringement case with Samsung, Apple provided to Samsung's outside attorney confidential documents on the iPhone maker's patent-licensing deal with Nokia. That deal, the order says, … Read more
