New Windows Phone 7 jailbreak tool coming soon

While Microsoft may have put the kibosh on the first jailbreak for the Windows Phone 7 platform, another one is on the way.

Developer Julien Schapman, speaking to blog Winrumors, outlined his plans to release a Windows Phone 7 "Device Manager" that will let users do things like side-load applications, explore the phone's file system, add custom ringtones, and manage applications. In other words, a handful of things the device does not currently offer out of the box.

Schapman said the software would be released following Microsoft's first software update, which is expected next month, so … Read more

PS3, iPhone hacker sets sights on Windows phones

Although Microsoft gave the team that created the Windows Phone 7 home brew unlocker ChevronWP7 a very friendly "please stop doing this" several months ago, it's gone in a slightly different direction with the infamous hacker who cracked both Sony's PlayStation 3 and Apple's iPhone wide open.

Earlier this week, hacker George Hotz, who is better known as "GeoHot," announced that he was beginning work on a jailbreak for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. Shortly thereafter, Brandon Watson--who runs developer platform product management for Microsoft, offered Hotz a Windows Phone over Twitter, … Read more

Geohot speaks out on PS3 jailbreak legal battle

After being hit with a restraining order from Sony earlier this week for allegedly bypassing "effective technological protective measures" in PlayStation 3 firmware 3.55, iPhone hacker George Hotz, better known as "Geohot," has decided it's time to stand up to the tech giant.

"Right now, still legally, you can go to my Web site and download my jailbreak for your PS3," Hotz said in an interview with G4TV's Attack of the Show last night. "And what it lets you do is install home-brew applications."

Report: Apple drops jailbreak detection API from iOS 4.2.1

After introducing an API that allowed developers to check on an iOS device to see if its operating system had been compromised (read: jailbroken) less than six months ago, Apple has now unexpectedly dropped the functionality from iOS 4.2.1.

The jailbreak detection API was part of the mobile device management (MDM) API which was introduced with iOS 4 in June this year, according to NetworkWorld. Now, device management vendors say Apple has dropped the API while also saying that there are alternatives to checking on whether an iOS device has been jailbroken.

So, it remains a mystery as … Read more

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreaking workaround

Though this isn't the official untethered jailbreaking solution for iOS 4.2.1, the iPhone Dev Team has produced a short demo video showing off a workaround method for getting it done now.

Hack-master comex is still working on the permanent untethered jailbreak, but if you've been following the jailbreaking community and happen to have saved SHSH blobs from your iOS device, your device could be jailbroken today.

A more efficient iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak should be just around the corner, so stay tuned. For more information about jailbreaking your iOS device, follow the iPhone Dev Team Blog. … Read more

iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken, available now

With Apple's recent release of the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 4.2.1, still warm on everyone's plate, the iPhone Dev Team has successfully jailbroken the update.

Thanks to a combination of past hacks (pwnage2, arm7_go, 24kpwn, and limera1n), the iPhone Dev Team was able to crack through the iOS 4.2.1 update, bringing people the capability to use jailbroken apps, games, and utilities on their iOS devices.

For those of you with an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or second-generation iPod Touch, the jailbreak method will remain just as simple. New iPod Touch … Read more

iOS 4.2 beta jailbroken for iPad

Jailbreaker iH8sn0w has released images of an iPad running the MobileTerminal jailbreak application, exposing the command line to users, suggesting that the iOS 4.2 firmware (still in beta) will be jailbroken upon its release this November.

This news is good for anyone who supports the jailbreak community and wants to have a jailbroken iPad running iOS 4.2 on day one.

Fifteen-year-old hacker iH8sn0w is a proven resource in the jailbreaking world, responsible for Sn0wbreeze, iReb, iDetector, and f0recast. iPhoneWorld has a nice interview with iH8sn0w if you'd like to learn more about him and his experiences in … Read more

PwnageTool jailbreaks 4.1 devices, Apple TV 2

Here's some Apple news that has nothing to do with today's Back to Mac announcements: The Dev Team today released PwnageTool 4.1, a jailbreaking app for OS X that allows users of iDevices--iPod Touches, iPads, iPhones--to load custom firmware on their gadgets.

The tool uses a variety of exploits to maintain carrier unlocks on unlocked devices, and works on any device that can run iOS 4.1 (3.2.2 for iPad users). The only devices it doesn't work on are the original iPhone and the first two generations of the iPod Touch, the Dev Team … Read more

iOS 4.1 jailbreak arrives, but do you want it?

Almost a month ago to the day, I reported that hackers had found a way to jailbreak iOS 4.1--and asked if it was worth the hassle anymore. That question generated lots of great discussion, and now is the perfect time to revisit it.

That's because an iOS 4.1 jailbreak, Limera1n, is now in the wild. Unlike the JailbreakMe hack that made jailbreaking iOS 4.0 as simple as loading a URL in your iPhone's browser, Limera1n requires a PC and a download--one that's currently available for Windows only.

To use the hack, start by … Read more

Dev-Team shows jailbreak for 2nd-gen Apple TV

The iPhone Dev-Team has been using a tool called Shatter to jailbreak iPhones and iPod Touches running iOS 4.1. It's not in userland yet--meaning, no, it's not ready for you to download and try--but it's a very promising jailbreak. It uses an exploit at a very low level of iOS that they say Apple might not be able to patch easily.

Shatter isn't just for iPhones and iPod Touches, it seems. A video recently posted on the Dev-Team's blog shows the exploit being applied to the new Apple TV. Right now, it doesn't … Read more
