Instacane shows us Hurricane Sandy photos from Instagram

For non-East Coasters like myself, it's hard to picture what it's like going through hurricane prep, or even a hurricane itself. With Hurricane Irene last year, Twitter and Facebook were full of photos of what the storm was really like, by those who were in the middle of it.

As Hurricane Sandy approaches, the same type of photos are appearing again, but with a good amount of them coming from Instagram. To make it easy to follow the stream of photos on Instagram, a couple of developers made a Web site aptly titled Instacane.com.

Browse Instagram on your iPad with Iris

Instagram does not offer an app with native support for the iPad, and blowing up the iPhone app on an iPad is not ideal unless you enjoy blurry, pixelated images. There are a number of free apps -- InstaFlow, Padgram, Pictacular -- that let you view your Instagram feed on the iPad, so why would you spend $1.99 on Iris? I can't quite recommend you do so, but it is the most polished of the group I looked at this week.

Before I get into Iris, I must first offer the standard Instagram-on-the-iPad disclaimer: Instagram does not let you post photos via a third-party app. Thus, no third-party app offers full Instagram functionality. An app such as Iris, however, lets you view crisp, clear, and large Instagram photos on an iPad, along with a variety of fun and useful features, from commenting on and liking photos to sharing via Twitter and browsing photos by location on a map.… Read more

Browse Instagram on your iPad with Padgram

I would not advise anybody to browse pixelated images using Instagram magnified on the iPad. Until Instagram releases a version tailored to the iPad, you'll need to turn to a third-party app if you'd like to view larger images of your Instagram feed. Before you get too excited, you should know that Instagram does not let you post photos via a third-party app. There are a handful of Instagram iPad apps, however, that let you browse, like, and comment on photos, along with a variety of fun and useful features such as sharing on other social networks and browsing Instagram via a map view.

Padgram is a free iPad app that lets you browse Instagram feeds in landscape mode. It features a unique subscription feature for tags, but it lacks a way to browse one full-size image after another. Let's have a look.… Read more

Browse Instagram on your iPad with Pictacular

Did you know you can use an iPad as an Instagram viewer? Instagram does not offer an iPad app, so you'll need to find a third-party app. And while Instagram does not let you post photos with a third-party app, there are such apps that let you view your Instagram feed writ large on an iPad. In addition to letting you browse your Instagram feed, these Instagram iPad apps offer a variety of fun and useful features, from commenting on and liking photos to sharing on other social networks and browsing Instagram via a map view

Pictacular is a free iPad app that offers a number of ways to browse Instagram photos, and it's the best app I've encountered in terms of displaying comments up front. It can also be prone to freezes and crashes. Let's have a look.… Read more

Facebook's final Instagram tab: $715 million in cash, stock

Facebook ended up paying $715 million to purchase Instagram instead of the original $1 billion figure agreed upon earlier this year, according to a quarterly investment report filed today.

The social network paid $521 million in stocks and cash that was set aside for the purchase, but also added an additional 11 million shares for Instagram employees at the close of the deal in September, according to the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission

The $521 million includes about 12 million shares of common stock to Instagram's non-employee stockholders and $300 million in cash. The additional 11 million … Read more

Browse Instagram on your iPad with InstaFlow

I am a regular user of Instagram and a regular user of an iPad. When scrolling through my Instagram feed on my iPhone, I occasionally feel the need to take a closer look at a photo. Instagram does not offer an app with native support for the iPad, and blowing up the iPhone app on an iPad is not ideal. Thankfully, there are a number of apps that let you browse your Instagram feed on an iPad.

Instagram does not let you post photos with a third-party app, so you can't use these apps to upload a photo that … Read more

Digging deep into Microsoft's Surface

Wednesday's CNET Update covers the Surface:

Microsoft's Surface RT tablet hits stores Friday, but CNET has the full review here. Today's tech news roundup also goes over the differences in Windows RT and Windows 8.

Workaround lets you upload Instagram photos from your desktop computer

Though Instagram recently added likes and comments to its Web interface, a complete Web experience, filled with photo uploads, streams, and and profile-viewing is still on my wish list.

Many have adopted their phone as their primary camera, but there's a niche group of users -- like bloggers and photographers -- who work around Instragram's limited app environment to upload full-res photos from their dSLR cameras.

Possibilities include uploading photos through the iPad Camera Connection Kit, or even e-mailing a photo from a desktop computer and uploading it to Instagram through that route. Savvy Android users might even … Read more

Chirpify lets you buy stuff on Instagram

Chirpify, a startup that lets consumers purchase items by simply typing the word "buy" on Twitter, is heading to the photo-happy Instagram with one hot visual -- tattoo artist and reality star Kat Von D.

Von D joins other celebrities and brands -- like hip hop artists Meek Mill and Wale, the creators of Kony 2012 Invisible Children and Keen footwear -- signed up to start selling goods on Instagram today using Chipify's service. The Portland, Ore., startup conducts sales through social media -- taking payments, and in some cases, delivering the products through direct messaging. On … Read more
