Hyundai's new Blue Link shares car location on Facebook

Burnishing its upscale image, Hyundai announced a new telematics service for its cars called Blue Link. The service offers emergency assistance along with a number of convenience features, including vehicle location sharing to select family and friends, and through Facebook.

Although Hyundai's announcement does not provide complete operational details, Blue Link appears to have an associated smartphone app, an in-car hardware component, a call center, and integration with the car's navigation system.

Similar to OnStar, Blue Link detects airbag deployment and sends the car's location to a call center. An operator then attempts to contact the car'… Read more

Hyundai Veloster coupe isn't exactly a coupe

Last month, Hyundai gave us a sneak peek at its upcoming Veloster sport coupe, set to be revealed at the 2011 Detroit auto show. This week, we get a second look at the Veloster that reveals that the coupe isn't exactly a coupe after all. It has four doors, but not in the way that you might expect.

At first, the teaser shot (depicted above) appears to illustrate a five-door hatchback design. However, closer inspection reveals that the Veloster will feature an asymmetrical design with a single door on the driver's side and a pair of doors on … Read more

CNET Tech Car of the Year for 2010

2011 Nissan Leaf

Earlier this month we invited you to vote for the 2010 Tech Car of the Year from our five nominees. This year proved an upset, though, as our staff judges came down on the side of the 2011 Nissan Leaf, these votes overruling the general support for the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and the Audi A8. The MKZ Hybrid is an excellent car, although its very close relative, the Ford Fusion Hybrid, won last year's award. Audi came out this year with a phenomenal flagship sedan in the new … Read more

Hyundai teases Veloster sport coupe before Detroit

There have been rumblings and spy shots floating around the Internet for some time, but today Hyundai makes its upcoming compact sport coupe official with the launching of a teaser campaign for the 2011 Hyundai Veloster.

The teaser site doesn't show much more than a countdown to the vehicle's unveiling at the 2011 Detroit auto show on January 10. However, a teaser video found on the automaker's YouTube channel (embedded below) lets us know that the coupe will feature a direct-injected engine--likely a four-cylinder--mated to a dual-clutch automatic gearbox that delivers an estimated 40 mpg. Those numbers … Read more

Hyundai demos Equus' owner's manual iPad app

When Hyundai debuted its line-topping Equus, the automaker also made the grand claim that it would be ditching the luxury sedan's paper owner's manuals in favor of a 16GB Wi-Fi Apple iPad and an app. We've already taken the Equus for a test-drive, and now prospective buyers can test-drive the Hyundai Equus iPad Owner Experience app, which is available for download in the iTunes App Store.

Demonstrated in the video below, the app is shown playing promotional videos, giving users access to a 3D vehicle walk-around, and running animated and interactive demonstrations of vehicle safety features, such … Read more

Can 40 mpg give Elantra an edge?

SAN DIEGO--Hard-charging Hyundai hopes its 2011 Elantra will shake up the compact segment by offering an entire lineup with a 40-mpg highway fuel economy rating and features the competition lacks.

The basics: Featuring the slick "fluidic sculpture" design language seen on the Sonata, the redesigned Elantra is a touch longer and sits lower than its predecessor.

The compact sedan is powered by a new 1.8-liter four-banger from Hyundai Motor Corp.'s Nu engine family that generates 145 hp and 143 pound-feet of torque.

The engine adds power and features an aluminum block and head that help shave … Read more

How new Hyundai Azera is shaping up

Hyundai released renderings last week of the redesigned Azera sedan, expected to arrive stateside in 2012. Like the Sonata and new Elantra, the new Azera features Hyundai's slippery "fluidic sculpture" design style. Details about the power train and features were not released.

2011 Hyundai Elantra spotted before LA reveal

Earlier today, Hyundai released a staged "spy photo" via TwitPic of its upcoming 2011 Elantra as a teaser for the compact sedan's reveal at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. We'd show you the photo, but we've got something even better: an undisguised 2011 Elantra spotted on the streets of San Francisco, not two blocks from CNET's offices.

As expected, the Elantra carries over many of the styling cues that debuted with Hyundai's larger Sonata, including windswept headlamps, a prominent flowing crease that runs the length of the vehicle's flank, and wide … Read more

Hyundai Equus gets the Dub treatment at SEMA

Hyundai hit the 2008 SEMA Show hard with an ultraluxe selection of its then-new Genesis Sedan. In 2009, it was the Genesis Coupe's time to shine and the automaker made the sports car available to almost any tuner who wanted one--keeping the best, of course, at its own booth. At the 2010 SEMA Show, Hyundai continues its aftermarket blitz with the new flagship Equus, giving one example to the guys at Dub for their trademark treatment of big wheels, big style, and big sound. Another Equus benefits from Hyundai's longstanding relationship with Rhys Millen Racing, getting a … Read more
