Samsung: Give home-grown phone, tablet apps more love

At an event in New York today, Samsung launched its new flagship tablet, the quad-core Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with Android 4.0 and a stylus capable of performing a long list of tasks.

The Note 10.1 is Samsung's best tablet yet, and the S Pen stylus gives it a boost. There's just one problem: while the S Pen's touch-pad tricks look impressive on any canvas, once digital pen hits digital pad, the experience becomes riddled with an inflexible learning curve, logical skips, and interruptions in execution. Most of these accumulate around Samsung's home-grown … Read more

Samsung's mSpot Music Hub looks clean, falls flat

Samsung's Music Hub app launched on the Samsung Galaxy S3 in Europe back in May, but it's taken until now for the subscription music service to hit our shores. CNET got an eyeful (and an earful) of the Music Hub app on several GS3 devices ahead of launch. Since the software was preproduction, there may be some slight differences between what we saw and the final product.

What it is The most important thing to know is that even if it comes preloaded on your phone, the Music Hub isn't free. Fueled by Samsung-owned mSpot, the mobile … Read more

Samsung to reinstate the Galaxy S3's search function

Never fear, a fix is supposedly near. Samsung confirmed today that the recent "stability update" on the Galaxy S3 that rendered the on-device search function useless was going to be repaired immediately, according to the BBC.

"The most recent software upgrade for the Galaxy S3 in the UK included the inadvertent removal of the universal search function," the company said in a statement, according to the BBC. "Samsung will provide the correct software upgrade within the next few days."

Reports of the bunk update surfaced earlier this month when S3 owners found out that … Read more

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest consumer electronics maker, reported a record second-quarter net profit Friday on the continued strong sales of its smartphones.

The South Korea-based company said net profits for the three months ending June 30 rose to $4.5 billion, an increase of 48 percent over the year-ago period, in line with guidance the company gave earlier this month. Best Samsung Galaxy S3 cases

Editors' note: This post was updated December 21, 2012, with five new products, including cases from Aduro, Covert, Samsung, Sena, and Urban Armor Gear.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has quickly become one of the most popular Android smartphones, and like the iPhone, has spurred a cottage industry of cases and covers.

In boiling down the best of what's currently out there, I tried to provide a good mix of well-designed, affordable cases with more expensive models that offer some unique attributes.… Read more

Questions rise over Skype wiretapping

It's time to tap into the juiciest tech conversations for Monday:

Microsoft has not given a straight answer about whether its Skype service can facilitate law enforcement wiretapping of conversations. Previously, the online chat service was so heavily encrypted that the company went on the record about not being able to participate with wiretapping.

But Skype just made a change to its technology, and some say the changes make it possible to intercept a call. But when asked, Microsoft didn't admit if wiretapping was possible. It told Slate that Skype "co-operates with law enforcement agencies as much … Read more

Samsung Galaxy S3 hits 10 million sales mark early

Samsung's chief executive predicted last month that sales of the Galaxy S3 would hit 10 million by the end of July and the smartphone appears to have passed that milestone a little early.

Shin Jong-kyun, the president of Samsung's information technology and mobile communication division, told reporters that the Android-powered smartphone surpassed the 10 million sales mark but did not reveal specific sales figures, according to the Yonhap news agency. That translates to about 190,000 Galaxy S3 devices sold every day for the past two months.

Samsung's flagship handset, which is available through AT&T, … Read more

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean could be headed to more devices

Google's latest sweet Android 4.1 update, better known as Jelly Bean, looks to be rolling out to more devices, even as many are still waiting to be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Earlier today, HTC confirmed that Android 4.1 is coming to its HTC One X, One S, and One XL.

Not confirmed but just as compelling is the report from SamMobile that Samsung has begun testing Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S3 and could push an update to its new flagship phone later this summer. A little harder to believe is the report's additional contention that testing is also under way on the Galaxy S2, and that it could also receive Android 4.1 if all goes well with its successor device.… Read more

Samsung to launch 64GB Galaxy S3 in second half of year

Samsung's 64GB Galaxy S3 is alive and well and due to launch during the second half of the year.

Addressing concerns that the 64GB flavor had been discontinued, Samsung told The Verge that the new model phone is on track for release later this year. The company cautioned that the device is currently scheduled for an international rollout. So U.S. customers may have a longer wait on their hands.

CNET contacted Samsung for comment and will update the story when we get more information. But the company issued the following statement to the Verge:

The 64GB model of … Read more

Samsung Galaxy S3 takes on the HTC One X (video)

We love a good, clean fight between top smartphones, and the more evenly matched they are, the better. AT&T's HTC One X was our undisputed Android favorite before the Samsung Galaxy S3 blew onto the scene. But the GS3 stands up against the One X.

Both have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as their operating systems, LTE capability, and they even share the same dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, Qualcomm's fastest yet. Each smartphone heavyweight also packs an 8-megapixel camera with extra software muscle and 1080p HD video, and large, HD screens.
