Cowon announces 16GB iAudio7

Our recent Editors' Choice MP3 player might be getting a significant boost in storage capacity. A press release on Cowon's Korean Web site lays out the details for a 16GB version of the iAudio 7, as well as a version of the Cowon D2 that's been beefed up to 8GB and is capable of using 8GB SD expansion cards. No word yet on pricing or availability in the United States. Along with Creative's announcement of its 16GB Zen V Plus last week, there's a good chance that 16GB players will be filling the shelves for the … Read more

Cowon goes red, upgrades firmware, and drops prices

Cowon just keeps showering us with good news. Earlier I reported on the U.S. release of the Cowon iAudio 7, and now I've got photos of the latest red version of the Cowon D2. The red D2 was given a very soft launch here in the United States and appears to have been available directly and through a few online retailers for the past several weeks. To sweeten the deal, Cowon has dropped prices on some models of the D2, U3, F2, and A2 by around $10 to $20.

The cherry on top is a new firmware upgrade … Read more

Photos: Cowon iAudio 7 reaches U.S. shores

We reported earlier on Cowon's announcement of their flash-based iAudio 7 MP3 player, and now we have the photos to prove it exists. We've heard directly from Cowon that the iAudio 7 will be available for purchase in the U.S. the first week of July. The product we received is still not the finished version, so we can't subject it to a real review yet. So far, it looks and behaves nearly identical to its microdrive predecessor, the iAudio 6. That's not such a bad thing, given what an outstanding player the iAudio 6 was. … Read more

Cowon iAudio 7 Flash MP3 player announced

One of our favorite MP3 players is getting an upgrade. Cowon announced the iAudio 7 today in Korea, updating their micro-drive iAudio 6 player to a lighter, leaner flash-based player. The update includes a significant jump in battery life, from 20 hours to a remarkable 60 hours. The iAudio 6 supports standard audio formats such as MP3, AAC, WMA, ASF, WAV, and even beloved (yet rarely supported) formats such as OGG and FLAC. It looks as though many of the great features of its predecessor have been maintained, including line-in recording, voice recording, video playback, BBE sound enhancer, and its … Read more

Cowon retires iAudio X5 MP3 player; X7 set for summer debut

MP3 player manufacturer Cowon has announced that their iAudio X5 MP3 player will soon be discontinued. To fill the void, reports claim that Cowon will release an iAudio X7 model sometime this summer. The X5 has enjoyed a loyal following since it debuted in 2005, due partly to its excellent sound quality. There's no word on exactly what the X7 has in store. Plenty of rumors abound and even a suspicious mock-up has surfaced.

Here's what we do know. Cowon's latest D2 MP3 player uses a touch screen. Cowon's upcoming Q5 uses a touch screen. The … Read more

Cowon Q5 gets official: not your ordinary PMP

We first got a glimpse of Cowon's super-portable media player, the Cowon Q5, back at CES 2007, but details were pretty foggy on specs, pricing, and availability. However, things are clearing up as the company has announced final pricing and specs for the United States, and the forecast for this PMP looks quite rosy.

First, the Q5 will come in two models: a 40GB version for $499.99 and a 60GB version at $549.99. Both devices are expected to ship by the end of Q2 (sorry, Cowon didn't get any more specific than that), and they … Read more
