Oh, do leave the Google CEO's politics alone

I understand that some people might be upset that Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, has decided to personally endorse Barack Obama for President.

I have heard echoes that this taints the Google brand, that McCain-supporting Google employees (yes, both of them) are upset and that Mr. Schmidt just might be using this endorsement to foster his company's, or even his own, ambitions in the event of an Obama victory (Gosh, no. Really?).

Here is the news. Every CEO is political. Being CEO is, in its very essence, something of a political position. With a small 'p' and sometimes with a … Read more

CEO is wrong to play politics with Google's brand

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has officially thrown his weight behind Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race. I find it a bit unseemly and unfair to the employees at Google, even though many probably support Obama.

I felt the same about then eBay CEO Meg Whitman taking a public stand for John McCain, though at least she was on her way out of the eBay CEO chair at the time.

Google, as a company, has done well to take a neutral stance, inviting both the Republican and Democratic candidates to speak at the Google campus, and providing technology infrastructure … Read more

Obama campaign launches Facebook Connect integration

The Obama campaign on Monday announced that it launched Facebook Connect integration on its social network that aims at organizing grassroots campaigns, My.BarackObama.com.

"Starting today, you can connect your Facebook account with your My.BarackObama.com account," a campaign representative said in a statement. "When you do that, you'll be able to find your Facebook friends who are also on My.BarackObama.com. In addition to that, each time that you attend a campaign event or make phone calls for Barack, that information will appear back on Facebook. Your friends will know exactly what … Read more

Obama gets backing of Google CEO Schmidt

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Silicon Valley heavyweight Google, plans to campaign on behalf of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

On Tuesday, just two weeks before Election Day on November 4, Schmidt will join Sen. Obama at an event in Florida to moderate a panel on the economy, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. Schmidt has unofficially been advising the Obama campaign on technology and energy matters.

Schmidt says the endorsement of a party nominee is his own, and not a statement on behalf of his company. "I'm doing this personally," he said in an interview with the … Read more

Secret customized iPod tunes of celebrity joggers

Nike, having already collaborated with LCD Soundsystem on the creation of music that might enhance running performance, is now commissioning more young musicians to create tunes specifically for your sweaty ears.

A key in finding music that will improve your performance, some experts believe, is Beats Per Minute (BPM). The more beats in every 60 seconds, the more strides you are likely to take.

However, I understand that aerobic performance might also be enhanced by the rearrangement of a song's lyrics.

The Taylor and Francis Journal of Sports Science published research that concluded: "When selecting music for an … Read more

Tech start-ups compare notes with Joe the Plumber

Will Joe the Plumber's tax message resonate in Silicon Valley?

Joe Wurzelbacher, an Ohio plumber considering whether to buy a business, turned into an unlikely media star this week after he confronted Sen. Barack Obama over the Democratic presidential nominee's tax proposal.

Obama maintains that his plan would reduce personal income taxes on 95 percent of the wage earners in the United States. But after an Obama appearance at Holland, Ohio, Wurzelbacher told Obama that his tax plan would take money out of his pocket.

That was the beginning of Wurzelbacher's 15 minutes of fame. His name … Read more

CBS Webcast: Examining McCain-Obama debate No. 3

Presidential contenders John McCain and Barack Obama squared off Wednesday night for their third and final debate before Election Day, but the star of the show might have been Joe the Plumber.

Joe Wurzelbacher, an Ohio plumber, loomed large in the debate after McCain brought him up as an everyman worried about what might happen with tax rates under a new administration. As they have in the previous debates, McCain and Obama tried to spell out their economic philosophies for a curious electorate, and especially undecided voters.

Following the debate, which also covered the general domestic policy plans of the … Read more

Vint Cerf backs Obama for U.S. president

Vint Cerf has come out in support of Barack Obama for United States president.

In a YouTube video he recorded, Cerf, Google's chief Internet evangelist, said he was supporting Obama primarily because of the Democratic candidate's position on Net neutrality.

Cerf commands wide influence throughout the technology world due to the role he played in the development of the Internet. Cerf co-designed the TCP/IP protocol with Robert E. Kahn. While at MCI, he oversaw the development of the world's first commercial e-mail service to be connected to the Internet.

Here's a transcription of what he … Read more

CBS live Webcast: Presidential debate, round three

Just as the economy has dominated headlines in recent weeks, it is likely to be the overriding issue Wednesday night in the third and final debate between John McCain and Barack Obama.

Moderating the debate--which is to focus in on domestic policy as well as economic matters--will be Bob Schieffer, the chief Washington correspondent for CBS News and host of the show Face the Nation.

Obama ad appears in Xbox 360 car racing game

Ads for Democratic politician Barack Obama are appearing in an Electronic Arts high-speed racing game. This appears to be the first time that a presidential candidate has bought in-game advertising.

Electronic Arts confirmed on Tuesday to our sister site GameSpot that the ads have been appearing on virtual Obama billboards since October 6, and will continue to run until election day in November.

The ads will appear in the Xbox 360 version of the game in 10 states, most of them hotly contested: Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Colorado, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, and Wisconsin.

The game in question … Read more
