Daily Debrief: Mozilla exceeds expectations of Firefox 3 launch

With less than an hour to go in Mozilla's 24-hour attempt to set a record for the most downloads, I check in with CNET News.com's Stephen Shankland, about the launch of Firefox 3. Despite Mozilla's temporary site outage, it appears to have been a success, both with the numbers (7 million plus) and content.

As a Firefox user myself, I initially switched over for the tabbed browsing and some of the third party add-ons. Little did I know that I was building my "nerd cred" by choosing it over Internet Explorer or other browsers. … Read more

Mozilla blows big Firefox 3 debut? Relax

I know things go bump in the night. That's the nature of the beast. Especially when your servers are spitting out 14,000 downloads per minute. So for the hair splitters out there turning purple over a temporary glitch at Mozilla's Web site, have a Coke and take a few minutes to inhale.

Shouldn't it have gone smoothly from the get-go? Natch. But there are worse things in life. The site was flakey for the better part of two hours (depending upon your time zone), but it's working now. Hey, if the engineering Einsteins over at … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 747: Get Firefox (if you can)

It's Firefox Download Day! In bummer news, Mozilla's site was down by at least 10:12 a.m. (about the time we started our show). So, that's a bad start, then. In other news, AT&T customers using phones other than iPhone will, indeed, have to pay full price for a new iPhone. That's just how the cell phone world works. And the blogosphere takes a legitimately outrageous situation and wildly exaggerates the outrageousness by repeating old information over and over. Sigh. Meet Larry, Firefox's friendly passport officer

I recently spoke with Johnathan Nightingale, Mozilla's "Human Shield," the man who designed the security interface within Firefox 3. One of the big changes is how Firefox communicates the authenticity of a given site. Located on the left hand side of the address bar is a tiny icon associated with the site. Sites using Extended Verification Secure Socket Layers (EV SSL) go an additional step.

Nightingale explains: "If you go to PayPal.com, for instance, that will expand out and it'll say PayPal Inc USA because PayPal is a site that presents this enhanced identity … Read more

Firefox 3 Download Day, June 17 2008

Today is Firefox 3 Download Day 2008. Those of us on the west coast should be on the lookout starting at 10am to download the latest and greatest version of Firefox and put more nails into the IE coffin.

Besides the fun of ruining Microsoft's day, the Mozilla team is going for a world record. You can learn more about it here.

Daily Debrief: Firefox 3 looks for a million downloads

I'm a Firefox user, how about you? If you're part of the roughly 20 percent market share using Mozilla's free, open-source Web-browsing software, you're probably looking forward to Tuesday, June 17th's release of version 3. In fact, the company is hoping that 1 million of you are excited in hopes of setting a record for the most downloads in a 24-hour period.

In Friday's edition of the Daily Debrief, I chat with CNET Webware.com's Rafe Needleman about what to expect with this version. He's been using the release candidate for a … Read more

Firefox 3 won't have 'private browsing'

Correction at 7:50 a.m. PDT: The spelling of Johnathan Nightingale has been fixed.

At least one security feature won't make it into the final release of Firefox 3 on June 17, Mozilla confirmed again Thursday.

The feature, Private Browsing, would have disabled all caching, cookie downloads, history records, and form data used during the current session. In essence, you could surf the Web and leave no fingerprints.

"It basically said to the browser: I would like what I'm about to do to not be logged anywhere," said Johnathan Nightingale, Mozilla's "human shield,&… Read more

Could IE8 incompatibilities be a boon for Firefox?

Mary Jo Foley notes that the more standards-compliant Internet Explorer 8 may cause some problems for website owners. Why? Well, many have tailored their websites to non-standards compliant IE7 (as well as prior versions), and may find that opening the doors to IE8 may not be painless.

As Microsoft noted on its IE blog:

What does "getting ready for IE8" mean for web sites? IE8 displays content in IE8 Standards mode - its most standards-compliant layout mode - by default. In previous blog posts, we've discussed how this aligns with our commitment to Web standards interoperability. However, browsing with this default setting may cause content written for previous versions of IE to display differently than intended. This creates a "get ready" call to action for site owners to ensure their content will continue to display seamlessly in IE8.

It also creates a "get ready" call to rival browsers, and particularly Mozilla's Firefox, to capitalize on Microsoft's incompatibility with itself to remind website creators that web standards are just that: Standards that should lead to greater cross-platform/browser compatibility. As more websites code for IE8, it should lead to those same sites working better with Firefox, Safari, and other browsers.… Read more

Buzz Out Loud 744: A date with Firefox

Firefox 3 comes out June 17, and that's all we have to say, except we hope it fixes Molly's Flash problems so she doesn't have to get a Mac--or Opera. In other news of the day, you can now find out once and for all whether your car mechanic is giving you a good deal. Hint: No.
