What the iPhone commercials tell us

Apple iPhone watchers breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday when TV commercials shown during 60 Minutes revealed the June 29 release date at long last. From our perspective we don't know what's better--finally putting an end to five months of rumors or actually getting more information about a cell phone that has sent people into hysterics (yes, I'm including Crave in that group).

Though the commercials didn't tell us much more than what we already know, they do let us get a look at the device in action. Here's what we saw.

Apple junkies, mark your calendars: iPhone on June 29

Not much else to say here, other than that Apple has made it official that the iPhone will be released on June 29. That's a Friday. This means, depending on your affiliations, that you can either breathe a sigh of relief that after the 29th you'll optimally stop hearing annoying iPhone rumors, or you can stop speculating and focus on raising that $600 to feed your addiction. Apple: iPhone will ship June 29th, commercials debut

Apple has begun airing three television commercials officially indicating the iPhone will ship on June 29th. At least two of the spots were shown Sunday night (June 3rd) during CBS' 60 minutes broadcast, and have also been posted to Apple's Web site. The three commercials are: "Never been an iPod" demonstrates Cover Flow scrolling, position-based switching between horizontal and vertical orientation, and video playback "Calamari" shows the Google Maps application locating a seafood restaurant, then calling it. iPhone is open to third-party apps, says Jobs

During the interview with Walt Mossberg at D5, Steve Jobs apparently let slip (according to the transcript from Gizmodo and Engadget), that even though the Apple iPhone won't start out of the gate with support for third-party applications, Apple is open to it and is working on making that possible later this year. Both transcripts imply that Jobs was concerned about security issues, which is what presumably was holding up the process. June is iPhone month, is September iPhone 2 month?

Just for a moment, forget about waiting for the first iteration of Apple's iPhone: speculation is well under way about the next version.

According to reports in two Taiwanese newspapers Tuesday, the Commercial Times and the Economic Daily News, manufacturing powerhouse Quanta Computer has landed the contract to build a second-generation iPhone for Apple starting in September. The first version isn't out yet, as anyone with a pulse is probably aware, but the next version requires a "different outer design," according to numerous translations of the reports.

Not sure about Prada phone

Prada's phone is as close to the iPhone as you'll get. Everything is done with a tap of your finger. There are essentially no buttons to work with.

Once you get beyond how this looks, though, you'll face up to a major cell phone decision: do you really--I mean REALLY--like this feature? In my case, it's starting to feel like a "no." Prepaid iPhones? We'll see about that

The Boy Genius came across AT&T screenshots that show the Apple iPhone will be available to the carrier's Go Phone prepaid users once it launches next month. Such news is contrary to everything we've heard about the iPhone so far (and granted, that isn't much), so we're a bit skeptical the screenshots are authentic. FCC approves the iPhone

Apple's iPhone took one step closer to launching Wednesday, as the company received permission from the Federal Communications Commission to sell it in the U.S.

It's not like that permission was ever really in doubt. But the FCC requires anyone who makes a phone or wireless device for use in this country to pass some basic tests that ensure the device isn't putting out harmful radiation, or death rays, or other emissions that could cause problems. Apple's hiring 'iPhone Personal Trainers,' but what's the start date?

Apple wants to hire "iPhone Personal Trainers" to work at a Sacramento call center doing iPhone technical support.

The company has posted two job announcements on its Web site, one for an iPhone Personal Trainer and the other for an iPhone Personal Trainer Team Manager.

The manager's job description includes this breathless description: "You'll drive customer excellence home like a World Series player."

The open house is today at Apple's campus in Elk Grove, outside of Sacramento. Apple's Web site lists the Elk Grove address as 2511 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove.
