Happy hour with the iPhone

The American public will get its first chance to buy the iPhone at 6 p.m. in each local time zone, Apple confirmed Wednesday.

Somehow, I don't think Apple and AT&T will have two-for-one specials on the iPhone, but my New York-based colleagues will be the first to see how crowds react to the release of the iPhone at 6 p.m. ET. Those of us out here in California will have to wait until 6 p.m. our time for the official release of the phone, in yet another blatant example of East Coast bias.

Digg for the iPhone

What are iPhone applications going to look and feel like? We saw yesterday a simple shopping list application, and here's another one bound to be a big hit: Digg for the iPhone.

This "app," like others to come, is really just a Web site designed for the JavaScript in Safari, and for the iPhone's small screen. (It works in Firefox and IE, too). The interface employs the "fling" feature that Steve Jobs and the iPhone commercials show off: when you drag down a list with your fingertip (or mouse), and let go, it feels … Read more

The iPhone requires an iTunes Store account

One of the first things you'll need to do with your new iPhone is register with the iTunes Store in order to activate the handset.

Apple revealed the requirement in an e-mail sent Tuesday to those who had registered to receive e-mail updates on the TMHGIH (The Most Hyped Gadget In History). Presumably, most of the iPhone early adopters will be Apple devotees with current iTunes Store accounts, but for those who don't have an account already, have your credit card ready during the iPhone setup process.

Why would Apple do this? For one thing, iTunes is the … Read more

Third-party apps for iPhone only deliverable through Web -- no standalone (offline) programs

We've received provisional confirmation from Apple representatives at WWDC that the "robust Web 2.0" iPhone applications Steve Jobs spoke of during his keynote address will only be deliverable through the Web. In other words, it appears that users will have to utilize an active network connection and visit ordinary Web pages to access these "applications."

This is a major point of attention for prospective developers, as it plausibly denies the ability to store Web-standards-based apps locally for easy offline access and display within the normal iPhone interface (essentially Widgets, which Apple has not given … Read more

No Flash, no Java for iPhone; statement from Adobe

Our operatives at this week's WWDC have confirmed with Apple representatives that initial software included with the iPhone will not offer the ability to play back Flash content embedded in Web pages; nor will the device initially offer a Java runtime engine.

Flash Apparently, though the Safari browser on the iPhone will have a plug-in architecture, a Flash plug-in will not be delivered in time for launch. It also appears that the version of QuickTime used by the iPhone is a stripped down version, since the full-blown Mac OS X version of QuickTime has limited built-in support for playing … Read more

First third-party iPhone app: A shopping list

It only runs on Safari--and no one but Apple knows if it'll actually run on the iPhone, because JavaScript support is still a mystery--but the first third-party application built with the iPhone in mind is freely available.

OneTrip, a simple JavaScript shopping list builder that runs only on Safari, was created by designer Neven Mrgan. You can download Safari here to test out the application.

According to Mrgan's Twitter page, the app existed as early as May 31. That's either tremendous foresight by Mrgan, amazing luck that Apple announced Safari as the official iPhone app engine yesterday at WWDC, … Read more

The message states:

Project to develop SSH client for iPhone

A new third-party development project has been spawned with the hopes of creating a highly desirable, currently missing (as far as we know) function for the iPhone: an SSH client. The "Hull Project" lays out these goals for the client: to provide an easy-to-install solution on your server to allow secure shell access to your machine to provide an access as close as possible to a real ssh client. to provide an interface aligned with the "standard" Apple iPhone applications As announced yesterday during Steve Jobs keynote to WWDC attendees, there will be no sanctioned third-party … Read more
