YouTube on iPhone coming at launch

Apple has announced that despite the iPhone's lack of Flash capabilities, the device will be able to access YouTube content through a partnership and development workaround with Google. The content will stream through an Apple-designed application over either Wi-Fi or EDGE.

An Apple press release says:

"YouTube has begun encoding their videos in the advanced H.264 format, and iPhone will be the first mobile device to use the H.264-encoded videos. Over 10,000 videos will be available on June 29, and YouTube will be adding more each week until their full catalog of videos is available … Read more

Let's do this thing

Well, the Macalope's faithful and well-groomed readers know that he doesn't suffer silly punditry lightly. And this may be only his second post over at his new digs (hey, did you check out the fussball table?!), but let's see if he's become a domesticated animal or if he still rolls the way he used to.

Before linking to the piece in question, let's take a look at a quote.

Apple excels in creative and innovative marketing. Often it's what they don't tell you that creates the most buzz. For example, we know next … Read more

Interview with Raven Zachary, founder of iPhone Developers camp

Today iPhone Atlas sat down to lunch with Raven Zachary, an Open Source Industry Analyst with The 451 Group and founder of the "iPhone Developers Camp," a free-to-attend conference to be held July 6-8, 2007 at an as-yet unspecified venue in the Bay Area, California (actually the venue and host have already been decided, but that information is still confidential). Raven explained to us the impetus behind the camp, why it will be different from commercial conferences, and why Apple's decision to go Web-only for iPhone development might be like the decision to … Read more

iPhone Web pages ("apps") should be 480 pixels wide, 10 MB maximum

Tony Chang from the University of Washington's Emerging Technology department has posted notes from the Developing Web Sites for iPhone session at WWDC where Apple told developers they could "learn iPhone best practices for ensuring optimal web development of your existing website, or hosted web application."

A few salient points:

480 pixel page width Apple recommends that developers use a 480 pixel-width stylesheet for iPhone-deliverable Web pages/apps. The reason, apparently: the iPhone's screen is 320x480 in portrait mode, 480x320 in landscape mode. Pages should scale down to 320 pixel-width when in portrait mode, rather than … Read more

Jawbone to be sold alongside iPhone

When Apple fans across the country flock to their neighborhood Apple Store to pick up their shiny new iPhone next Friday, they'll also have the opportunity to buy a Jawbone Bluetooth headset to go along with it. That's right; the Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth headset will be sold alongside the iPhone at all Apple Stores (plus Apple's online store) starting June 29, 2007. Designed by Yves Behar and decked out with military-grade noise-canceling technology, the Jawbone is certainly no slouch in the design and performance department, but we can't help but wonder whatever happened to Apple's own Bluetooth headset that Steve Jobs showed at MacWorldRead more

Rating the iPhone's battery life

Apple's new battery ratings for the iPhone certainly look impressive, but is 8 hours of talk time really top of the line as cell phones go? In a press release announcing the new figures, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that "the iPhone's battery life is longer than any other smart phone and even longer than most MP3 players." That's a broad claim, particularly since that 8 hours is just a promise. In our experience, the rated battery life of a device and the actual battery life can vary, something that Apple acknowledges in the fine … Read more

iPhone apps: Try before you buy

You don't need an iPhone to try out iPhone apps. Since the application platform is just a browser, you can see right now how some of the apps that people are building will look on your phone.

We've covered Digg and OneTrip already, but to see even more iPhone apps all together on one page, check out iPhoneApplicationList. For best results you should use Safari, although I've also had good luck previewing iPhone apps in Firefox.

Since the apps are just Web pages, no doubt there will be many, many iPhone app directories springing up soon.

Apple going into car tech?

Is Apple looking to compete with Garmin or Alpine down the road?

German magazine Focus has reported that Apple is developing something that would combine maintenance, entertainment, communication and navigation for cars into one device and that Mercedes will be the first to feature it.

A dashboard system for Mercedes from Apple, or an iPhone integration system for the Mercedes, seems like a logical probability given the fact that the two partnered on the first iPod integration kit for cars in 2006.

Appled refused to comment directly on either possibility.

"We have not announced plans yet," said Tom … Read more

Apple: You can gab on that iPhone for eight hours

According to Apple, you can ditch your fears over the rumor that the iPhone has 45 minutes of talk time. The company announced Monday that the much-anticipated handset will ship with much better battery life than was expected when it was first announced in January. The iPhone will finally be released, as you probably already know, on Friday June 29.

The numbers from Apple? The company had initially anticipated that the iPhone battery would allow five hours of talk time (though rumors around the blogosphere suggested it was actually much less than that), but now Apple is boasting that it'… Read more

Development standards for the iPhone

The iPhoneWebDev group has posted an interesting page that begins to lay out some basic standards for developing iPhone applications. Though these specifications will likely change rapidly after the device actually ships, there are some excellent guidelines applicable to current touchscreen interfaces that should also hold true for the iPhone, as well as some keen observations based on current, publicly available information.

For instance, the page points out that the interface for some already-developed Web-based, iPhone-targeted applications (like this shopping list organizer) use buttons that are too small to be readily touchable: "Touchscreen buttons should be minimum 1/2 … Read more
