Apple rolls out the iPhone displays

It doesn't appear that Apple and AT&T hired window designers from Macy's for the iPhone campaign.

The first window ads for the iPhone appeared in the retail stores of both companies Friday. They're fairly simple, just a picture of the iPhone itself and reminding everyone that it's "coming June 29." AppleInsider spotted some larger ads in what appears to be a mall somewhere, but in busy downtown San Francisco, Apple and AT&T went for a more compact campaign.

Those stores will be the epicenters of iPhone madness next Friday when … Read more

iPhone campout guides on GridSkipper

On your way to REI to pick up a camping equipment and provisions for your long wait in the iPhone line on June 29? Also check out travel community GridSkipper, which has city-specific campout guides for your expedition.

The guides include all-important food and restroom locations near the stores, plus recommended nearby hotels, and locations of nearest free Wi-Fi hubs.

I imagine it won't be long before store-specific Jaiku groups will form up, too, so people waiting in lines can talk among themselves. And organize revolts when their stores run out of phones.

If your local store isn't … Read more

Does iPhone need a 20-minute introductory video?

Apple has just released a twenty-minute guided video tour of the iPhone. I launched the video expecting a whizzy, emotionally-engaging presentation that would get me even more jazzed about the iPhone's release. Instead I found a straightforward, talking-head tutorial that had me wishing that John Hodgman or Justin Long would show up to provide a little comic relief.

I suppose I shouldn't slam Apple for choosing substance over style, but the button-by-button hand-holding stood out as an anomaly from all the other experiences I have had with Apple over the past 20 years.

I expect Apple communications to … Read more

iPhone tour available on Apple's site

The longest iPhone commercial you'll ever see is available on Apple's Web site.

The company on Friday posted a 20-minute guided tour of the device that is one of the most exhaustive looks yet at that iPhone thing you might have heard about. A really nice, enthusiastic man wearing a black shirt (no, not that one) takes you through the various features of the iPhone, including making phone calls, listening to music, sending e-mail, browsing the Web, and using applications like Google Maps.

Alas, the technical details we've all been waiting for are not to be found. … Read more

Won't someone think of the children?!

ABC's Ashley Phillips says iPhone fever: Not everyone buys hype.

But some critics believe that the "early adopters" who wait anxiously in line next week outside Apple and AT&T stores... could be in for a nasty surprise.

Really? Which critics think Apple and AT&T's customers are ignorant idiots who know nothing of the product they're going to stand in line for hours and sign away two years of their cellular lives to get?

According to industry analysts, some of the drawbacks are the lack of built-in GPS, which is already widely … Read more

iPhone's keyboard is the big 'if'

As stylish as the Prada phone is, the touch screen problem I wrote about earlier hasn't gotten better. It's often frustrating.

I say this because of all these great iPhone ads we're seeing on television. When I look at the keypad displayed, I wonder if it's all going to be as simple and perfect as they make it look.

I'm skeptical. It seems as if it would be very easy to overlap onto a different key. At least on the BlackBerry, you know when it happens. It's a matter of feel. You immediately know … Read more

New iPhone usage revelations from Apple: Swipe deletion, typing tips, Wi-Fi on/off, much more

As reported earlier today, Apple has posted a new 20-minute iPhone "guided tour" video (click here to view). The demonstration offers some interesting revelations about the device's usage, including:

The host talks about "16" applications -- presumably the 12 periphery apps (including Google Maps, Calendar, SMS, etc.) and the 4 core apps: Phone, Mail, Safari and iPod. The Home button always takes you back to the home screen, no matter what function is being performed. Once you've gone to the home screen, a blinking status indicator will generally allow you to quickly switch back … Read more

The iPhone line starts here

Eight days! In only eight days (after this post) the iPhone will be released to the technology-loving public. The thing I'm most amazed about is the hype this thing is generating. I'm definitely excited and have been a supplier of hype myself in this very blog, but I wasn't prepared for the sheer volume of information and rumors surrounding a phone that hasn't even seen the light of day yet (unless you count those lucky Apple employees). The hype is reaching such a feverish pitch at this point that some Mac rumor sites, like the appropriately named MacRumors.com, are offering buying strategies to obtain an iPhone.… Read more
