AT&T Stores: One iPhone per customer

UPDATE: AT&T is saying one, Apple is saying two. It may be that AT&T outlets are limiting purchase to one-per-customer, while Apple retail outlets will sell each customer two.

----

Though we still can't call it absolutely confirmed, several AT&T retail locations have now told us that there will indeed be a one iPhone per customer rule. While some locations claim to still not have this information, three stores in the San Francisco Bay Area told us that the one-per rule is definite. However, it is still not clear if this is a … Read more

iPhone keyboard: Learns what you type, dynamically resizes key "hot zones"

Another iPhone demonstration video has been posted to Apple's Web site, this time detailing usage of device's the virtual, touch-screen keyboard.

Claiming that the keyboard "constantly analyzes keystrokes as you type," Apple says the iPhone keyboard uses two methods of text prediction: storage of frequently used words, including names and other data stored on the device, and a full dictionary that can auto-correct mistyped words.

As previously recommended, Apple says its best to start by using one finger with "deliberate" taps to type.

A magnifying glass pops up when touching and dragging over words … Read more

Products that are engineered and certified to be compatible with the iPhone will carry the 'Works with iPhone' logo on their packaging." Current AT&T customers must add an iPhone Data Plan to their current plan or upgrade to an iPhone plan. This is contrary to information in an Apple press release stating "iPhone customers can choose from any of AT&Tâ??s standard … Read more

Manhattan iPhone Watch: T minus 2.5 days

11 PM Eastern time, and the iPhone's just over two days away. The latest news from the NYC iPhone front is that a line has begun to form in front of Manhattan's "other Apple Store"--the smaller, less glamorous, not-open-24-7 downtown location in the shopping-heavy SoHo neighborhood. There are only three people in line, however, and they're all together so they're taking shifts (two were present when I got there). All three are from advertising agency Anomaly, which represents the nonprofit organization Keep a Child Alive. The two Anomalists I met, Lindsey Lanpher and … Read more

iPhone data plans: Cheap or pricey?

The announcement today of AT&T's iPhone service plans puts one of the last remaining pieces into the Apple puzzle. The data plans, which range in price from $60 per month to $100 per month depending on the number of anytime calling minutes, are unique to the iPhone and will not apply to other AT&T handsets. The number of night weekend minutes will vary as well, but all plans will include visual voice mail access, unlimited e-mail and mobile Web surfing, free mobile-to-mobile minutes, and 200 text messages. Current AT&T customers can add unlimited … Read more

'WSJ', 'NYT' reviews say iPhone features overcome slow network

Apple's first cell phone received mostly positive reviews from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times Tuesday afternoon, although both pointed out several flaws with the device.

Walt Mossberg and David Pogue, of the Journal and the Times, respectively, posted their reviews Tuesday afternoon. Mossberg's original headline was "The iPhone is breakthrough handheld computer," but it was later changed to "Testing out the iPhone." Pogue went with a slightly more nuanced "The iPhone matches most of its hype." Both reviewers had the iPhone for two weeks, and Mossberg noted he … Read more
