Slice of portability: Toast your bread on the go

We've covered silly-slash-interesting concepts before, but I'm not really clear on how I should feel about this handheld portable toaster by Korean designer Been Kim. You apparently run it over your bread like a fancy butter knife and it toasts that side in your hand. An LCD readout on the back gradually tells you just how toasty your toast is getting.

The product, still a concept as far as we can tell, is apparently wireless and uses a cord-free charging system. We're not sure how practical this is or if it can replace a regular toaster, but … Read more

Marching to the beat of simplicity and style

You can always count on an exhibition to inspire companies to create and display some pretty cool stuff, and the International Housewares Show in Chicago is no exception. Among Haier's showings this year is the new Piano Black line of small appliances.

The blue LED illumination looks good, but it's the features, like cool-to-the-touch handles, that will really win you over. This is a full line of appliances, including a cordless electric water kettle in standard and dome shapes, digital toasters in a variety of configurations, a food processor and blender combination, a citrus juicer, and more.

I'… Read more

This is no overgrown toaster oven

The other day a friend and I were discussing which was better to own: a toaster or a toaster oven. Toasters, being specialized appliances, tend to do a really good job at making toast. Toaster ovens however, sometimes fall short. But when it comes to practicality, the toaster oven is perfect for a multitude of tasks. In the end there is really no debate, as the only answer is simply to have one of each. While that may seem a bit overkill to some, it certainly isn't if the appliance you choose is more oven than toaster.

Toaster oven rivals oven-oven in versatility

Toaster ovens may be multitaskers by design, but quite often, they seem to not live up to their potential when actually in use. Sure, you can reheat pizza or broil an open face sandwich, but when it comes to actually cooking something (other than, well, toast), they often seem to fall short of the mark. No longer is that the case, as the toaster ovens of today offer a host of features.

The Calphalon Convection Toaster Oven combines the easy-to-use features of a toaster oven with the versatility of a convection oven. Large enough to accommodate a 12-inch pizza or … Read more

Toaster combines modern and classic styling--and that's it

There are a lot of toasters out there. For every personal aesthetic, there seems to be a corresponding toaster. Toasters range from the bright and shiny to gimmicky multitaskers made out of plastic. Machines are available for those that prefer design, and there are toasters out there that tout convenience. Combination appliances are great fun, and at times actually do save time and money (consider the toaster oven, for example). But sometimes you just want a toaster that toasts.

That is, toasts and looks cool too. The Bodum Bistro Toaster combines classic and modern design into one impressive design. All … Read more

Toast with full control

Toast can be a battle at my house. Everyone likes it just a little different--and if their toast isn't perfect, I'll be getting an earful. The Philips HD2618 Toaster offers a little more control of the toasting process, though, making it possible to get bread to the right level of toastiness--and avoid plenty of whining. It offers an LCD display with a digital countdown timer that gives you all the warning you need to get bread out before it crisps too far. The toaster uses a full 1,200 watts of power to speed up breakfast--as if the … Read more

A toaster that looks like a shiny new...toaster

So maybe you're planning on getting yourself the Bella Professional coffee maker and milk frother, and you're wondering what you'll eat while you're sipping your morning beverage. How about toast? Now, if Brian had his way, you'd be drawing on your food or marveling at the warming rack on a time-traveling machine. I've got a different suggestion.

Bella Professional has a 4-slice toaster with die-cast panels and stainless steel body.

The extra wide and deep slots are perfect for bagels. And don't worry; you've got a bun-warming rack. With the back-lit controls … Read more

Paint your toast with Pop Art Toaster

I have never questioned the wisdom of encouraging the artistic side of a growing child (hint: I encourage it), but this toaster seems to me more than just a bit wacky. Sure, kids benefit from making mealtime engaging and fun, but if you think you had problems with them drawing their masterpieces on the wall, just wait until you train then to paint with their food!

Nevertheless, if you encourage your child's interest in art at every opportunity, this Pop Art Toaster Creativity Coloring Kit might be up your alley. It comes with six plates to burn predetermined designs … Read more

Toaster from an alternate timeline?

As a fan of the breakfast sandwich, this product photo jumped out at me, not only because this toaster looks like something form 1950's futurism, but also because of the delicious looking croissant perched atop, seemingly just waiting for an egg, cheese, and bacon to come along.

As it turns out, the Kalorik Aztec Toaster isn't some new fangled breakfast machine (aw, shucks), but instead appears to be a pretty standard toaster, albeit with a pretty face. The grate upon which that croissant rests turns out to be a "bun warming rack", which in turn, rests … Read more
