NASA finds up to 1.3 trillion pounds of lunar ice

NASA scientists reported Monday night that the space agency has discovered as much as 1.3 trillion pounds of ice on the moon, a finding that indicates future lunar visitors could have a wealth of water waiting for them.

The new data was found using a NASA radar placed on board India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft. The ice was located in more than 40 craters, which vary in size from one mile to nine miles wide. All are located near the moon's north pole. All told, it is thought that there may be 600 million cubic meters of ice in … Read more

Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid coddles with tech delights

The S-class is a tech-lover's dream, loaded with seats that massage, radar that keeps set distances from other cars, mirrors that warn about cars to either side, and a speedometer that turns into a night vision camera. We were in seventh heaven riding around on its plush seats, listening to music from an iPod over its sweet-sounding Harman Kardan audio system.

And while previous S-classes left us with a little green guilt, or at least range anxiety, as the engine gulped down the gas, the S400 Hybrid has a more reasonable appetite. It is far from Prius territory, but … Read more

Wind power growth limited by radar conflicts

WASHINGTON--The most well-known obstacles to installing wind turbines are complaints over their visual impact and the potential for bird and bat deaths. But conflict with radar systems have derailed over 9,000 megawatts worth of wind capacity--nearly as much as was installed in the U.S. last year.

"We're not going to put up more wind (in many locations) without conflict because radar systems and wind systems love exactly the same terrain...which is where the wind is at," said Gary Seifert, a program manager for renewable energy technologies at the Idaho National Laboratories, during a presentation … Read more

Pocket Radar for tattletales, athletic coaches

When it comes to speed radars, why should police officers have all the fun? Santa Rosa, CA-based Pocket Radar, Inc. has engineered a palm-sized speed radar for those curious about the speed of moving objects.

Tattletales might enjoy aiming the device at motorists or speeding cops, but Pocket Radar is intended for more serious applications.

In an interview with the Press Democrat, co-founder Steve Goody explains that it can also be used by hockey, bike racing, horse racing, and soccer fans. "It has an application for any sport with a moving object," he said.

Buzz Out Loud Podcast 1118: The mean streets of Dell

Turns out Dell says it never deleted complaints from its forums about throttled processors, and it is working hard to fix the issues with updated BIOS. Donald suggests that the folks who claimed they were deleted by Dell probably lost a lot of street cred. We also speculate on the meaning of the Comcast acquisition of NBC Universal. Will "Heroes" become more Comcastic?

Infiniti QX56 neglected for tech

We don't often review gargantuan SUVs, but decided to check the Infiniti QX56, as Infiniti is generally a pretty high-tech automaker. What we found is a vehicle that falls behind the technological curve. Other Infiniti models get direct-injection engines, lane departure warning, iPod integration, and around-view cameras, but the QX56 sits in the lineup like a red-headed stepchild, looked over when Infiniti hands out the tech toys.

Volvo's very safe XC60

In line with its safety focus, Volvo is pioneering some very cool electronic-driver-aid technology. The 2010 Volvo XC60 can be had with lane departure warning, following-distance warning, and blind-spot detection. But while these safety gadgets are optional, Volvo takes the impressive step of making its City Safety feature standard. This feature automatically jams on the brakes when it detects an imminent low-speed collision, which should make insurance companies happy.

BMW releases a tech monster

BMW must hate us. The new 7-series came in with so much tech, we had to work long days to evaluate it all. Of course, a long day spent driving the 750Li over and around mountains wasn't exactly a painful experience. But then there was the time spent trying out the navigation system with its traffic avoidance feature, or activating night vision and seeing how the pedestrian detection works, not to mention trying out the lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, parking system, side-view cameras, phone system, stereo, and the list goes on. Fortunately, this is a new update … Read more

Hit and miss performance

RadarSync - Free Edition keeps your PC running on all cylinders by keeping you computer's software and drivers up to date. When we put it through the ringer, it worked quickly to perform an update scan. However, it took a considerable amount of time to download updates, and slowed down our computer's performance to the point we weren't able to continue working.

The main user interface is very straightforward, but we did find a few misspellings that lessened the program's overall professional appearance. First things first, we used the program to scan our computer for updates. … Read more

2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan first take

Currently, Infiniti offers some of the best cabin tech in the automotive world, and the 2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan exemplifies a balance of modern convenience and sport driving prowess. Although we recently reviewed the 2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe with all-wheel-drive, we took a look at the G37 Sedan to test out Infiniti's new adaptive cruise control system.

Where the Coupe shows off a sports car look with its quick drop from the roof line towards the trunk, the Sedan has that bubble design for the cabin common among modern cars. Of course, the extra doors and higher roof mean … Read more
