Bring the breakfast bar home

Waffles are good any time of the day or night. This may be because waffles are good topped with sweet or savory ingredients. From chicken and waffles to ice cream and berries, the waffle is a versatile base for many a delicious meal.

Perhaps more amazing than the ability to have waffles with any meal is the ability to have breakfast anytime. The breakfast bar in a hotel closes at a certain hour and the biscuit-selling fast-food joints do the same. Many restaurants serve breakfast until a predetermined time. For those who want 24-hour breakfast availability, it's best to … Read more

Deep-dish pizza straight from the oven

As much as I enjoy having the emergency frozen pizza on hand, nothing beats a freshly baked pie. Unfortunately, the high heat required for stunningly delicious thin crust makes home baking a difficult challenge. However, that same limitation proves to be an asset when considering the deep-dish pizza pie. Yes, a hot oven is still necessary, but it is not essential to the final product. Home baked deep-dish pizza is the way to go.

Of course, the right tools make all the difference. If you try baking a deep-dish pizza with a regular sheet pan, well, you can tell just … Read more

Rotating pizza oven keeps the pizza moving

I'm afraid the search will never end. The search for delicious pizza, that is. And why would I want it to end? As they say, "getting there is half the fun." But sometimes it isn't easy. While I may lament the selection of real pizzerias in my neck of the woods, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop searching anytime soon. However, as much as I enjoy the hunt, sometimes I am ready to settle for something known to be less than spectacular.

I'm talking about frozen pizza here. As delicious as "… Read more

Everyone's happy with the PizzaDome

San Francisco is not well known for its pizza. It's sad, but true. And while there is a smattering of decent pizza available, the options are few and far between. As a result, I did what any rational pizza-starved adult would do: I formed a pizza club.

So far this 'club' consists of just me and a fellow pizza-hungry buddy searching about for delicious area pizza. There's not much to it; basically, we find a promising spot and go eat there. No pictures. No arguing over thick or thin crust, to fold or not to fold; just a … Read more

Papa John's, Facebook on a mission to bulk up skinny nerds

A tragic subculture in our country rarely receives the media attention it needs and deserves. The group I allude to, of course, is the underweight nerd. The Simpsons has Comic Book Guy, Family Guy has Peter Griffin, even The Nutty Professor has Sherman Klump. The skinny guys have...Steven Q. Urkel. Why should all the overweight nerds get all the spotlight?

Facebook and Papa John's pizza are finally teaming up to give the little dudes a little help in their quest to be weightier. Any Facebook user who becomes a fan of Papa John's will automatically receive an … Read more

Perfect thin-crust pizza, right in your back yard

Here's one way to weather the economic downturn: Stop paying restaurant prices for wood-fired pizza and artisanal bread, and instead invest that money in a Kalamazoo Outdoor Artisan Pizza Oven.

Made of stainless steel for safe outdoor use, the Kalamazoo oven echoes the classic dome shape of Italian wood-fired ovens. The cooking surface is a crust-friendly professional composite baking stone, while the low, arched top reflects heat back at your food for even cooking. Using your choice of liquid propane or natural gas, the oven heats to temperatures ranging from 250 degrees to 800 degrees Fahrenheit; an integrated wood … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 854: Death to the Moon

We thought about calling this podcast graves in space, or delicious Yak, or Jason makes the earth move. But soup_n_salad in the chat room nailed it. A new company wants to send 5,000 capsules full of cremated remains to the moon for burial. Natali and Jason think this is littering, essentially. I think they gotta go somewhere and the Moon has space. We also talk about the new Asus phone, Flash on Windows mobile, and more. Listen now: Download today's podcast EPISODE 854

The 404 229: Where there's no one here to pick on Wilson

With Jeff on vacation and Justin dying of stomach herpes, Wilson is left alone to hold down The 404 fort. Mark Licea and Joey Kaminski join him today to talk about Quantum of Solace, Obama's BlackBerry, and ordering pizza from your TiVo.

Unfortunately, Wilson doesn't have the writing prowess of a one Justin Yu, but he'll do his best today to sum up what was a relatively disaster free show. First of all, he actually did pay attention to the chat room. So all you haters out there, Wilson can read. We also wish our second favorite Asian, J-Yu, a speedy recovery. We know we shouldn't have let him go home with that woman. Mark Licea joins the show to talk a bit about the latest Bond-movie and how kick ass it was. Mr. Kaminski chimes in on President-elect Barack Obama's BlackBerry addiction and its threat to national security. People keep on getting lazier, with cell phone airport check-in and ordering pizza from their TiVos. This, in turn, brings up memories of My Half-ton Dad on TLC. (Seriously people when you hit 400 lbs. put down the cheeseburger and see a doctor!)

Finally, the latest trailer for the new J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek comes out today. So for all your Trekkies out there, check your pants. It's already an order of magnitude more exciting than the craptastic Star Trek: Nemesis we got a few years ago. And we pay our respects to ValleyWag and Total Request Live. Only the former deserves our respect.

TiVo, Domino's team up to make us all fat

Thanks to a new agreement with pizza giant Domino's, owners of TiVo set-top boxes can now order food from the chain directly through their televisions, and even track delivery time so they know just when the pizza guy will be showing up to bring them a nice, tasty treat.

Oh, boy.

Here's the deal: when a Domino's ad or product placement shows up, TiVo users can click through with their remote controls to order pizza, or can access an on-demand ordering screen through a TiVo menu. It's similar in theory to the deals that TiVo has… Read more
