Nvidia touts ascendancy in Android, Windows 8 tablets

Nvidia's emergence as a leading player in both the Android and Windows 8 tablet markets was driven home today when the chip supplier's CEO discussed second-quarter results in an earnings conference call.

Revenue rose to $1.04 billion from $1.01 billion in the company's second quarter of last year. Analysts had forecast revenue of $1 billion.

The Ouya debate: Who really wants indie gaming hardware?

Upstart indie game company Ouya has made serious waves with its self-titled game console. The under-development system wants to be an open gaming platform, built around freemium games running on Nvidia's Tegra3 platform. According to the project's popular Kickstarter page, the Ouya will cost $99, but won't be ready until at least March 2013.

Despite the hype, however, there are some serious questions about whether the game industry can support another living room console, and whether gamers are looking for more set-top boxes to plug into their TVs.

Nvidia pushes new standard for wireless streaming

Chances are, if you're looking for a way to get the photos, video, or games from your phone to show up on your big screen TV, you've got a wire involved. Chipmaker Nvidia announced today that it's one step closer to having its smartphones and tablets wirelessly share content through a forthcoming standard called Miracast.

Miracast relies on a direct Wi-Fi connection to kick off communication between the devices. Similar to Apple's AirPlay, you don't need to log on to a typical Wi-Fi network.

Hackers strike again, hit Nvidia's developer zone

Nvidia is the latest company to get hit by hackers: The chipmaker was forced to take down its developer support Web site yesterday because user passwords may have been compromised.

In the place of Nvidia's Developer Zone Web site and forum is a note saying that the company has suspended operations due to attacks on the site by third parties. It warned that hackers may have gotten hold of hashed passwords from the site. The company recommended that people who frequent the Web site should change their passwords, particularly ones they also use on other sites.

New MacBook Pro, Air prices get slash treatment at Best Buy

Best Buy was quick to discount the newest MacBooks, offering savings up to $140 over the weekend.

The biggest discount is on the $2,799.99 Retina Pro with 8GB of memory and a 512GB solid-state drive (Model: MC976LL/A). That is off $140 to $2,659.99.

The least expensive Retina Pro dropped to $2,089.99 (Model: MC975LL/A), shaving $110 off the regular price (see image below).

Microsoft to feel Surface heat from PC makers

Microsoft's Surface tablet has got PC makers hopping mad. So, they're going to do something about it.

"[PC makers] are pissed off and they are looking for strategies now to not only counter the iPad but counter Surface," said a source at a large company that's part of the ecosystem -- the component suppliers and device manufacturers -- that does business with PC makers.

Google tablet set to limbo in at low $199 entry point

Google will launch a $199 tablet this week at its developers conference co-branded with Asus, Bloomberg is reporting.

This follows a series of reports that have been trickling out for months about a 7-inch Nexus tablet being developed with Asus. The tablet is slated to debut at the Google I/O conference that starts Wednesday.

The one feature garnering the most attention is price. At $199, the Google tablet is $200 less than Apple's $399 iPad 2.

Microsoft tablet and iPad to duke it out at large companies

Windows 8 Pro tablets have a shot at slowing iPad adoption at large companies, said Deutsche Bank -- though an analyst tempered the assessment with reservations.

Microsoft's Surface tablet running Windows 8 Pro can "leverage" the large existing base of Windows customers, giving it a better chance at checking the "penetration" of Apple's iPad at large business accounts, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore wrote in a research note on Monday.

How many ways can Microsoft tick off its partners in the wake of the Surface tablet announcement? Well, here's another.
