AT&T doubles down on Nokia with exclusive Lumia 920 deal

AT&T said today it will sell Nokia's Lumia 920 and 820 Windows Phone smartphones, just the latest in the carrier's increasingly crowded lineup of mobile devices.

The phone is expected to hit the market in November, although AT&T wasn't more specific. The company also didn't provide any pricing information. The Lumia 920, however, will be exclusive to AT&T.

The two phones are critical to Nokia's continued survival. While the Lumia 900 was a modest success for AT&T, its performance didn't wow anyone. Nokia is hoping for … Read more

Few seem to heed Tim Cook's directions on mapping apps

For developers, getting noticed is more than half the battle.

At a time when the big operating systems have more than half a million apps available for sale, developers have an increasingly hard time breaking through. A whole industry has sprung up around "app discovery," offering developers ways to promote their work to an audience that likely wouldn't find them otherwise.

In such an environment, recommendations are essential. And it's hard to imagine a more valuable recommendation than a personal endorsement from the CEO of the world's most valuable technology company.

But less than a … Read more

Nokia looks to sell headquarters, but don't expect it to move

Nokia may be trying to sell its headquarters.

In an interview with Reuters published today, a spokeswoman for the embattled mobile company said that Nokia is "evaluating different options for non-core parts, such as real estate holdings, and that includes the headquarters."

In a follow-up statement to CNET, Nokia spokesman Brett Young confirmed that Nokia is considering selling real estate, including its headquarters. However, he made clear that it doesn't "have any plans to move our headquarters." Instead, Nokia hopes to lease back the space from the new owner.

New Nokia ad: iPhone 5 is colorless

I misread a headline just now.

It was something about Apple saying the purple streaks in iPhone 5 photos were normal. I thought it said Apple was going to release a purple iPhone 5.

Which would strike me as potentially beautiful, were it to be the right, rich shade of purple.

No sooner had this thought slipped from my mind than TechCrunch revealed to me a new Nokia ad that had appeared on YouTube.

It is a very artistic affair, even if slightly reminiscent of that quite frightful Motorola tablet ad that suggested all Apple users were mindless sheep. (Yes, … Read more

Latest smartphone stats: Apple gaining ground on Samsung

While Samsung remains at the top of the U.S. smartphone market-share rankings, Apple is rapidly catching up to its staunch rival, the latest ComScore figures show.

The figures for the August 2012 report, collected from more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, show that Samsung's share remains flat, compared with a significant growth for Apple. Interestingly, the figures close before the iPhone 5 was released -- let alone announced -- showing an increase in iPhone uptake ahead of the expected next-generation Apple smartphone.

Apple's smartphone share grew 2.1 percent -- the highest increase in mobile subscribers seen since AprilRead more

Nokia Lumia 920 pricing abroad will have little effect on U.S. cost

High global prices for the Windows Phone 8 Nokia Lumia 920 are causing a stir for outlets reporting U.S. dollar equivalents ranging from $643 to $860 in Germany, Italy, Russia, and Sweden -- but U.S. buyers considering the phone have little cause to worry.

Although international price tags are said to be 10 percent to 25 percent higher than that of high-end rival Samsung Galaxy S3, according to pricing information gathered from German, Italian, and Swedish Web retailers, Nokia's U.S. pricing is guaranteed to cost less than 50 percent of those fees.

Episode 15: Molly gets her iPhone 5

I really wasn't going to order an iPhone 5 -- I stayed up until midnight on pre-order night to order two unlocked versions, one to unbox, and one to torture, and then realized the unlocked versions weren't available.

So, I now own one, but I do think that makes this week's Unboxing more exciting, because of my personal stake in the whole thing.

Speaking of exciting, for those of you who requested that we torture test the Nokia Lumia 900, here it is! Jeff Cannata takes over this one, and I think he's really getting the … Read more

Nokia goes after emerging markets with $99 Asha handsets

Nokia today unveiled two new Asha handsets in a concerted effort to appeal to customers in emerging markets.

Dubbed the Asha 308 and the Asha 309, the devices come with 3-inch touchscreens and 2-megapixel rear cameras. Unlike the company's Lumia line, the handsets aren't running Windows Phone. Instead, they run Nokia's Series 40 operating system, which it offers to consumers in emerging markets that are looking to invest more heavily in mobile products.

The Asha 308 and Asha 309 are nearly identical. However, the Asha 308 comes with built-in dual SIM, allowing owners to switch between up … Read more
