News Flash: There's music on MTV!

MTV, the channel that brings us great shows like Paris Hilton's My New BFF, MTV Cribs, True Life, and Sex, With Mom and Dad now has a place for all the music videos that made MTV, well, Music Television. The new MTV outlet is called, somewhat redundantly, MTVMusic.com. I remember when MTV played music 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; there were "on-air personalities" known as VJs, or video jockeys. Martha Quinn was my favorite.

MTV Music is, like, the raddest thing ever

It seems like the only complaint that the cranky digital-media press can come up with for MTVMusic.com, the legendary pop-culture brand's new music video hub, is, "Why wasn't this here years ago?"

Yeah, yeah, we know. There are licensing issues, especially for all those campy '80s videos that haven't seen the light of day in years. And launching a product prematurely could have led to bad press, as opposed to the "wow, we like this" response that MTV Music seems to have gotten thus far.

The issue, of course, is that most … Read more

UMG chief on YouTube: 'We don't look at anything as promotion'

Doug Morris, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, confirmed that his company is considering a plan to build a Web site to showcase its music videos instead of posting them to YouTube.

Morris, impresario of the largest of the four top recording companies, told Billboard that if the company decides to go ahead, the site would launch in January and would likely partner with another label. But why is he dissatisfied with YouTube?

"With YouTube, the quality (of video) isn't great; it gets low [cost per thousand, or CMP]," Morris, 69, told Billboard. "On the … Read more

Universal Music videos come to teen site Kiwibox

Universal Music Group has licensed its music videos to Kiwibox, a social-media site for teens that relaunched in August after quietly existing since the late '90s.

Under the terms of the agreement, Universal's music videos will begin being distributed on the "KiwiboxTV" video portal before the end of the year. Universal's labels and artists will receive a cut of ad revenue in compensation.

"Music remains one of the most important outlets of teen expression, and Kiwibox has long been a leader in promoting artists to its rapidly expanding community, " CEO Lin Daisaid in a … Read more

Get an 8GB Creative Zen player for $89.99 shipped (yep, it smokes the iPod nano too)

The last time I posted about the 8GB Creative Zen media player, it was $150. Now you can pick one up (new) for just $89.99 shipped--10 bucks less than the price of a refurbished, 4GB iPod nano. Now, lest you think I'm dumping on Apple or something (the suggestion did arise after last Thursday's post about the Sansa), let me explain why this is by far the better buy.

The Zen has a larger screen (2.5 inches), an FM tuner, twice the storage, and an SD card slot for adding even more storage. (Care for … Read more

Sansa MP3 player smokes iPod nano for $39.99 shipped

A refurbished 4GB iPod nano will run you $99. A refurbished 4GB SanDisk Sansa e260 will run you $39.99--shipped, no rebates--at Buy.com. End of post!

Well, okay, maybe you need more incentive than a $60 savings. The e260 features a microSD slot for adding more storage, an FM tuner/recorder, a voice recorder, subscription-service compatibility, and a removable battery. The iPod nano features, well, none of those.

CNET lurved the e260, awarding it 4 stars out of 5. I have the virtually identical e280, and apart from its so-so scroll wheel and buttons, it's an excellent … Read more

Last.fm adds Universal's music videos

This post was updated to clarify the size of Imeem compared to Last.fm.

Music videos from Universal Music Group's artists are now available on social music site Last.fm, the companies announced Tuesday.

That will make ad-supported videos from artists like the Killers, Jay-Z, Snow Patrol, and Amy Winehouse available on Last.fm, which already had a partnership to stream Universal's music catalog.

It's the first time Last.fm is bringing music videos to its site, which began offering original video programming last month.

"We want to offer a video library that rivals our unparalleled … Read more

Universal Music U.K. to debut series on Bebo

At the many advertising conferences dotting Internet Week New York this week, speakers and panelists have been exhorting the ad industry to start thinking more creatively when it comes to tackling digital media--even creating elaborate branded series in lieu of traditional commercials.

They weren't the only ones who got that memo. Record label Universal Music Group's Universal Music U.K. announced Monday that it's partnered with social network Bebo to broadcast a series called The Secret World of Sam King: one part video blog, one part Choose Your Own Adventure, and one part Universal advertorial. It's … Read more
