JVC Everio MG730 too expensive for a standard-def camcorder

It's not that the JVC Everio GZ-MG730 camcorder isn't good. The body is compact and comfortable to use. It produces solid-quality standard-definition video, and due to its 7-megapixel sensor you'll get above-average still photos out of it, too. There are manual controls for photos and video, a built-in flash for photos, and a microSD slot for additional storage beyond the internal 30GB hard drive. Dock and remote are included.

However, with a price ranging from $649 to $799 it's simply too expensive to overlook the fact that it is standard definition; the photos are not good … Read more

The 404 217: Where we're voting Steve Guttenberg in 08!

Audiophiliac Steve Guttenberg returns to the show to talk about his favorite MTV VJ's, infectious diseases, why judges hate him and an itch that's particularly hard to scratch. Today we remain true to the unofficial 404 slogan: "Decency not found." We say goodbye to VCRs and Verbose Asian Guy and hello to the most tragic celebrity deaths. Hey Justin, what's the difference between jam and jelly again?

Remember to check out Guttenberg's blog The Audiophiliac, a must-read for anything and everything related to high-end audio. Steve most recently posted about the new MTV music video site, "where old timers can relive the '80s with Talking Heads, Devo, Tom Petty, Billy Joel, and Tina Turner." We love Steve like our very own weird hippie uncle and you should too, after all, he served jury duty with Alan Hunter, one of the first five MTV VJ's, he works for CNET, and he can squat over 600 lbs.

Review: JVC KW-NX7000 navigation receiver has us grinning all the way

The JVC KW-NX7000 isn't cleverly named like its sibling, the El Kameleon, but it is just as cleverly designed. With its smart features, such as the proximity-based interface or the flash-memory-based navigation data, we found the KW-NX7000 extremely easy to use. We didn't like the sluggish iPod navigation or the omission of Bluetooth technology. However, the solid performance and fun little touches, like the custom greeting messages, ultimately made us fall in love with this receiver.

Review: JVC El Kameleon KD-AVX44

JVC Gumy Air earphones are cheap and colorful

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: the stock earbuds that came packaged with your MP3 player are not going to help you recognize the full potential of your device. (Unless, of course, you happen to own one of these players.) No matter how many times we say it, we still see countless individuals rocking white iPod earbuds. Perhaps people want others to know they own an iPod, or maybe they balk at the idea of spending even more money to make the most out of a device on which they've already dropped a healthy … Read more

JVC adopts AVCHD, CMOS for new HD Everios

Updated 6/23/08 with information about the sensors.

In an interesting turn, JVC's newest hard-disk-based HD camcorders--the Everio GZ-HD40, GZ-HD30, and GZ-HD10--will support AVCHD in addition to its traditional MPEG-2 formats. This is a great idea, at least for the interim, since it theoretically provides you with more flexibility in your video-editing options--especially if its AVCHD files aren't supported right out of the gate--and allows it to deliver high bit rate video beyond the 24Mbps maximum for AVCHD. Plus, the camcorders include FireWire (i.Link) interfaces, which many of today's models have dropped, for dealing with … Read more

JVC NX-PN7 dual iPod speaker now available

Back in January, JVC unveiled the NX-PN7, an iPod speaker system with not one but two iPod docks. The company sent out a press release today to announce that the NX-PN7 is officially available. Otherwise, it looks like nothing's changed since the unit's coming-out party six months ago. Despite doubling down on the music players, the unit is just 13 inches wide. In addition to being able to toggle between "iPod A" and "iPod B," the NX-PN7 features a clock, an auxiliary line-in, and a horizontal light beneath each iPod dock that can be … Read more

JVC camcorder spells YouTube with an 'S'

Cheap SD-based camcorders targeting fans of Web-video creation are the hot ticket now, and JVC's the latest to buy a seat on the bandwagon. Its new Everio GZ-MS100, the first in JVC's S series of flash-based camcorders spun off from the G series of hard-disk-based models, looks like a pretty standard compact budget SD-based camcorder, which JVC distinguishes by a one-button upload to YouTube.

On one hand, JVC eschews the fancy new designs favored by products such as the Flip Video Ultra or Creative Vado (watch this link for a review of the latter) to stick with the … Read more
