Facebook attack tricks users into 'liking' malicious links

Another clickjacking scam has hit Facebook, tricking hundreds of thousands of users to post messages to their pages saying that they like the malicious link, security firm Sophos said on Tuesday.

Like most of these scams, this one relies on social engineering and piques the interest of prospective victims with messages like:

• "LOL This girl gets OWNED after a POLICE OFFICER reads her STATUS MESSAGE."

• "This man takes a picture of himself EVERYDAY for 8 YEARS!!"

• "The Prom Dress That Got This Girl Suspended From School."

• "This Girl Has An Interesting Way Of … Read more

Five killer apps for your docked iPad

Does your iPad pull a lot of desk duty? Does it adorn your kitchen counter or even your nightstand? Do you routinely leave it on a dock or charger? If so, you should put that sucker to good use--even when you're not using it. After all, a big, beautiful screen is a terrible thing to waste.

As you learned yesterday, the iPad already knows how to function as a photo frame--and a damn fine one at that. But not everyone wants to look at photos all day. Maybe you'd prefer stock updates? Tweets? How about fish? Here are five apps to keep a docked iPad interesting:

Bloomberg: Want to keep tabs on the stock market? It's hard to imagine a lovelier window on Wall Street than Bloomberg for iPad. It delivers news, equity indices, a personalized stock portfolio, currency exchange rates, and plenty more, all wrapped in a gorgeous interface--and updated at regular intervals. Best of all, it's a freebie!

Chirp Frame: Twitter addicts, this one's for you. The app serves up tweets as they arrive, effectively turning your iPad into a big, beautiful Twitter frame. You can choose from one of three slick backgrounds, swiping as desired to read earlier tweets. Of course, when you're feeling the need to send out your own status update, all it takes is a tap of the screen to tweet (or reply). Chirp Frame costs 99 cents.

iQuarium HD: Real fish are kind of a pain, don't you think? You have to feed them, clean the tank, yell at people to stop tapping the glass, and all that. iQuarium provides all the joys of fish-tank ownership with none of the hassles (or expense--it's a mere $1.99). Actually, the app is as much a Tamagotchi-style game as it is a virtual fish tank, as you have to feed your fish daily--eventually earning "fish points" to decorate your tank with accessories, backgrounds, more fish, etc. If you want more instant gratification, check out Marine Aquarium (also $1.99).… Read more

How to use the iPad's Picture Frame mode

I'll admit it: I'm not using my iPad much. Maybe that's because I was already an iPhone user, and that continues to be my go-to device for e-mail, e-books, Facebook, and the like. Or maybe it's because I just haven't found enough killer apps yet.

Whatever, the case, I'm finding I enjoy the device more when I'm looking at it than when I'm touching it. That's because I've discovered Picture Frame, which turns that big, beautiful screen into a splendid animated photo frame.

Perhaps you've noticed the little picture … Read more

Get an 8-inch Wi-Fi photo frame for $59 shipped

I'm a big fan of revolving photo frames. I mean, why stare at the same old picture when you can see a different one every time you walk by?

Thursday only, Dell has the ViewSonic VFP838-11 8-inch photo frame for just $59 shipped. I've seen similar frames for less, but not with the one feature I covet most: Wi-Fi.

Using your home network, the VFP838-11 can wirelessly connect to online photo-sharing sites like Flickr and Picasa. It also supports custom RSS feeds through a service called FrameChannel, which serves up things like weather, sports scores, and Facebook and … Read more

Cursors to you

RealWorld Graphics' Cursor Editor is a nifty free app that you can use to create and edit special Windows cursors, including both static and animated designs. Drag-and-drop functionality, built-in drawing tools and image filters, correction capabilities, and support for sophisticated image-handling features such as layers and arbitrary selections give it capabilities we've usually seen only in large graphics packages that typically have correspondingly large prices. It can create custom icons, too.

A full Windows installer includes an optional component to support translations via community-made language packs, which we appreciate as a feature but declined to install. The clean and … Read more

Get a 12.2-megapixel camera and digital photo frame/printer for $104.99

In the market for a new camera? Kodak's EasyShare M341 is a 12.2-megapixel model that's earned pretty solid reviews. And right now, Geeks.com has the EasyShare M341 on sale for $104.99--a solid price considering that it sells for upwards of $130 elsewhere and $150 if you buy it from Kodak.

However, there's a nice little perk that goes with this offer: When you buy the M341, you get a free SmartParts SP8PRT 8-inch digital photo frame with built-in photo printer. (Use coupon code FREEFRAME at checkout; the frame will get added to your … Read more

Quick batch processing

Batch Photo Factory lets you quickly apply frames, watermarks, and new naming conventions to a large batch of photos in one fell swoop. While we weren't entirely impressed with its frame options, it performed well in tests.

The program's interface is bland and contained a few spelling errors but was nevertheless functional and easy to navigate. A left-side pane displays the selected image file or folder as well as a file renaming option. We opted to use a common base name with sequential numbers, but you can also keep the original file name and add a prefix. As … Read more

Archos tablets go bigger, dumber, cheaper

Do you like the idea of a coffee table tablet PC, but can't imagine shelling out $500 for an iPad? If so, perhaps you'd be interested in paying half as much for half the functionality at half the speed.

That seems to be the logic behind the latest announcement (Google Translate) from Archos, where details for a pair of "Home Tablets" were made public ahead of Cebit.

The Home Tablets are both based off Google's Android operating system, but skinned and augmented by Archos in a similar fashion as the Archos 5 Internet Tablet released near the end of last year.

The smaller of the two new tablets is the Archos 7, which sports a design similar to the Archos 5, but uses a larger 7-inch touch screen. Internally, the Archos 7 takes a big step back from the Archos 5, running its system on a basic 600MHz ARM 9 processor. You can connect over Wi-Fi to check e-mail and browse the Web, but Archos 5 features such as Bluetooth and GPS are a no-go.

The Archos 7 also includes a microSD memory slot, which is a good thing considering the device will only come in 2GB and 8GB capacities. Multimedia playback is mentioned in the press release (including Flash video), but no… Read more
