HTC bootloader policy a very big deal to a small number of users

The hacking and modding community scored a small victory this week when HTC announced it would no longer be locking bootloaders on its handsets. In other words, it will be easier to unlock future HTC phones and, hopefully, tablets. Once a phone is unlocked, it is possible for the end users to load any custom ROM or experience they'd like. What's more, while many of HTC's products are loaded with Sense UI and carrier-branded applications, modders often load a clean and clutter-free version of Android.

HTC's CEO Peter Chou delivered the news via a Facebook post … Read more

Report: ViewSonic to win 7-inch Honeycomb tablet race

ViewSonic is set to unveil the industry's first 7-inch Android Honeycomb tablet at month's end, according to sources cited by tech site Pocket-Lint.

The ViewPad 7x will debut on May 31 at the Computex computer show in Taipei, Taiwan, Pocket-Lint reported, and will be a follow-up rather than a replacement to ViewSonic's existing ViewPad 7 tablet, which runs Android 2.2, aka Froyo. Following its late May unveiling, the device should reach consumers in June.

Details are scarce, but according to Pocket-Lint, the ViewPad 7x will sport an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, cameras in front and back, and support for the high-speed HSPA+ networks offered by AT&T and T-Mobile. The tablet would also include both HDMI and DLNA ports to pipe content through a TV or media center device.… Read more

HTC Flyer stylus sold separately, $80 at Best Buy

One of the coolest features about the upcoming HTC Flyer is the Scribe and digital ink technology that lets you take notes, draw pictures, and more, right on the tablet with a stylus. However, it looks like you'll have to pay extra for that privilege.

As first reported by DroidLife, Best Buy currently has the HTC Digital Pen for the Flyer listed at $79.99, on top of the $499.99 for the tablet itself. Though this may be Best Buy's price, HTC told CNET that it has not announced pricing for the stylus but did confirm that … Read more

HTC working to bring parts of new Sense UI to older devices

Of course, if you're still locked into your older HTC device, you may just be green with envy, but there's now hope that you'll also be able to get a taste of the new UI.

The prospects actually didn't look so good last night when HTC responded to a customer via its Twitter account and said that hardware requirements would limit Sense 3.0 to its … Read more

Report: Consumers craving big-screen phones

Large-screen smartphones are proving a hot commodity among more consumers, according to a report released yesterday by NPD Group.

But new smartphones sporting screens 4 inches and larger have gobbled up share at the expense of their smaller cousins with screens under 3.5 inches.

To back up its findings, NPD pointed to a range of different smartphones by screen size. The overall share … Read more
