Testing out Lexus' safety features

ALAMEDA, Calif.--I'm hurtling down a piece of asphalt, my right foot jamming the accelerator of the Lexus I'm driving to the floor, speed building rapidly, my heart rate rising, when suddenly, I add my left foot to the mix, jamming it down hard on the brake pedal.

The car screeches to a halt.

For anyone who's been paying attention the last year or so, the memory of Toyota's highly publicized troubles related to cars suddenly and irrevocably accelerating should still be fresh. And that's almost certainly why the Lexus representative--and professional driver--who's sitting … Read more

No extra charge for MKZ hybrid model

DETROIT--Ford Motor will sticker the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid at the same price as its conventional gasoline sibling rather than charge a premium for its hybrid technology.

The MKZ Hybrid, which goes on sale this fall, will start at $35,180, including shipping. The pricing is identical to the 2011 Lincoln MKZ gasoline model.

It's also below the price of the 2010 Lexus HS--the MKZ Hybrid's nearest competitor, which starts at $35,525, including shipping. Lincoln wants to offer customers the luxury, room, and comfort of a mid-size sedan while providing environmental benefits, a representative from Ford said. … Read more

Lexus ES 350 delivers on luxury

Lexus made its name building luxury cars that compare well with offerings from high-end European brands, usually at a significantly lower price. The ES 350, even though at the lower end of the Lexus lineup, keeps that luxury trait alive. The sole purpose of the car is to pamper its passengers.

To that end, its automatic features, including adaptive cruise control, take care of the simpler tasks. Navigation and the Bluetooth phone system make for practical cabin tech features, and the Mark Levinson audio system treats the car's occupants to excellent sound quality.

2010 Lexus GX 460: A fur coat on a pig?

If the Lexus GX 460 is any indication, there is still a market for big, truck-based luxury SUVs. We may find these symbols of excess passe, but there's no denying the ride comfort and the easy drivability of the GX 460. And what better way to transport half a dozen people?

The Lexus' transmission has a sport setting, but you can ignore that. The SUV's console is also studded with various controls for handling off road situations. You will probably ignore those, too. We also found a few annoying quirks with the GX 460's electronics, and it … Read more

Report: U.S. finds driver error in some Toyota cases

Early findings by the U.S. Department of Transportation indicate that drivers were to blame in some sudden-acceleration accidents, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar with the results.

Preliminary results show some cases of driver error, the Journal reported Wednesday. "The early results suggest that some drivers who said their Toyotas and Lexuses surged out of control were mistakenly flooring the accelerator when they intended to jam on the brakes," the Journal said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to release the findings and it declined to comment about them, the Journal … Read more

Toyota loses domain name trademark appeal

The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Thursday ruled that an authorized Lexus dealer can use the word "Lexus" in its Internet domain name. It also ruled that the Japanese automaker took advantage of two auto brokers who represented themselves in court.

Toyota sued Lisa and Farzad Tabari, the owners of Fast Imports, in a Los Angeles federal court in 2003 stating that consumers would be confused by the use of the name Lexus in the defendant's Web site domain name and the use of Lexus photos and the Lexus logo.
