Nokia sinks deeper into junk status with new S&P downgrade

The bad news just keeps coming for Nokia.

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services today announced that it has downgraded Nokia's long-term corporate credit rating from BB+ to BB-. Although both ratings are considered "junk status," BB- is a lower rating, indicating that the company "faces major ongoing uncertainties to adverse business, financial, and economic conditions." S&P has affirmed an even worse B rating on Nokia's short-term credit.

"The rating actions reflect a downward revision of our estimates of revenues and profitability for Nokia's smartphone operations in 2012 and 2013,&… Read more

The worldwide mobile phone market shrank in the second quarter of this year, with sales falling by 2.3 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago, according to research company Gartner.

Nokia has finally gotten Qt off its hands.

The company announced today that it has sold Qt, its cross-platform development framework business, to Finland-based software services company, Digia. The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal or a sales price. Digia acquired a portion of Qt from Nokia last year. This transaction completes the changeover.

Qt allows developers to write an application just once and then deploy it across a host of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and OS X. Qt also offers mobile development support. And in that space, Qt supports Symbian, Nokia's N9, and Windows Phone.… Read more

Buy Nokia? Surely you jest, Lenovo exec says

Rumors swirled recently, suggesting that Lenovo was considering acquiring Nokia. But a Lenovo executive has tossed some cold water on those reports.

Speaking to Reuters, Lenovo's chief for Europe, Mideast, and Africa, Gianfranco Lanci, said that the rumors "must be a joke," adding that "there's nothing ongoing" with his company and Nokia.

A marriage between Nokia and Lenovo would seem rather odd, to say the least. The companies don't necessarily appeal to the same market -- Lenovo does well in the enterprise, after all -- and there's no compelling reason for a … Read more

FCC approves 3G version of Nokia N95

The fellas at the freakin' FCC have given their blessing to Nokia's latest product, a 3G version of the N95 slider phone.

Before any wireless device can be sold in the U.S., the Federal Communications Commission has to test it to make sure its emissions won't cause brain damage or summon aliens from another planet. One nice side effect of that (other than the lack of brain damage) is that the FCC publishes the results of those tests on its Web site before the device is formally released, complete with photos and a user manual.
