Asus reveals a small-form-factor PC, but with few details

We'll see if we can swing by the Asus booth for more info on this one, but the basics of the new Asus Nova P22 small-form-factor PC include 802.11n wireless, an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, and a $799 price tag when it comes to the U.S. in late January. That looks like a slot-loading DVD drive, too. 802.11n Wi-Fi is great, we'd like to see more of it and expect to this year. Otherwise, this system looks like a black, Windows version of a Mac Mini. Throw in an HD-optical drive (OK, Blu-ray, probably … Read more

Coming soon: A notebook with a terabyte

It's the notebook for neurotics.

Asus, the Taiwanese computer maker, will come out with a notebook that sports two 500GB hard drives from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. Combined, this will give a fully configured Asus M70 notebook a terabyte of storage.

Put another way, the notebook will be capable of storing 1,000 hours of video, or more than 350 feature length movies, or 250,000 four-minute songs. That will probably tide you over for even the worst airport layovers. A terabyte also holds about the same amount of data that could be stored on the paper from 50,… Read more

Get a taste of the Asus U6S

Ever since Crave UK called the chocolate-colored Asus U6S "completely edible," our sweet tooth has been twinging. Thankfully, we in the States can satisfy the craving, because Asus just announced that the U6S is headed our way.

The glossy brown, 3.3-pound laptop features a 12.1-inch LED-backlit display that keeps its profile (somewhat) slim. Inside the case, Asus offers a broad range of processor choices to fit every budget, from the single-core 1.86GHz Celeron M540 to the latest 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo T7700. The rest of the platform includes Nvidia GeForce 8400M G graphics, 2GB … Read more

This week in laptops

We'll spare you the laptop-themed version of The Night Before Christmas and say that little has changed since last week: the pre-Christmas, pre-CES, pre-MacWorld world is a silent world indeed. And, this being the last weekly roundup of 2007 (even tireless tech reporters take a break now and then), we're delivering the week's news in a theme-based lightning round.

Tiny laptops: The XO laptop gives a 9-year-old unexpected powers; CNET blogger Dave Rosenberg offered his thoughts on his brand-new Eee PC; and Eee PC owners can change operating systems, either just-released eeeXubuntu or the painstakingly hacked Windows Vista. … Read more

New Wi-Fi card makes old laptops feel young

This is an ideal accessory for those unfortunate enough to still be lugging around a laptop that doesn't have a built-in Wi-Fi card. If you're tired of hiding that embarrassing protrusion from the slot of your notebook at Starbucks, now you can get something that will give you wireless access and make you look like a cutting-edge geek at the same time.

Asus has come up with what it calls "the world's smallest 802.11n USB 2.0 card," which comes with its own cradle that plugs into your computer and proudly sits upright in … Read more

Beware Black Friday laptop deals

Editor's Note: If you've stumbled across this page looking for the latest on Black Friday laptop deals, we've rated many of the 2009 Black Friday bargains here.

Like opening weekend box office numbers to Hollywood bean-counters, the weekend shopping extravaganza known as Black Friday is read as tea leaves for the rest of the holiday shopping season (even though these initial impressions are not as accurate as they used to be).

Besides door-busting deals on big-screen TVs and digital cameras, one of the most-watched categories is laptops, where eager bargain hunters are looking for a sub-$500 … Read more

Asus: 10-inch Eee PC due next year

When we reviewed the Asus Eee PC 4G a couple of weeks ago, our chief complaints about this otherwise excellent and affordable laptop concerned its small, low-resolution display, the minuscule hard drive, and a cramped keyboard. The 7-inch screen with 800x480 resolution necessitates horizontal scrolling on most Web pages. The 4GB flash drive (of which only 1.3GB is available) necessitates keeping an external drive on hand. The tiny keys necessitate adjusting your typing style or suffering more than the occasional typo. Now, it looks like next year's model will address two of our three gripes.

Asus goes with classic white for the holidays

Asus is one company that's never satisfied with what it's wearing. One day it's bamboo, the next Lamborghini yellow, and sometimes, just for fun, Prada pink. But for the holidays, it will dress its latest special-edition laptop in classic white.

Yet never one to do things simply, the computer maker has fitted it with a leather shell and silver trimming, according to PClaunches, while also accompanying it with a matching white leather handbag. The specs, as if anyone cared, include a 14.1-inch display, an Intel Core 2 Duo chip and a 250GB hard drive.
