Lenovo quarterly sales climb in weak market

Lenovo Group reported a 10.5 percent increase in its fiscal first quarter revenues, despite a weakening global economy.

The computer maker reported revenues climbed to $4.2 billion in the quarter ending June 30, up from $3.8 billion a year ago. Shipments of PCs climbed 14.6 percent for the quarter.

"Despite a softening global economy, we delivered solid gains in worldwide sales," Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo chairman, said in a statement.

Sales in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, for example, increased by 26 percent, while Asia Pacific shipments grew 11 percent.

The Americas, however, … Read more

Mac laptop prices steady as Windows prices fall

Speculation that Apple might be slashing Mac prices in the coming weeks could get a boost from new data released by The NPD Group.

Joe Wilcox at Apple Watch put together a chart of data from NPD showing the average selling prices of Windows PCs and Macs at retail stores in the U.S. As of June, the average Mac desktop retails for $1,543 while the average Mac notebook costs $1,515. On the Windows side, the average desktop costs $550 while the notebook costs $700.

Of course, Apple's decision to keep its Mac pricing for everything but … Read more

And the Eee PC hits just keep comin'...

Are you a travel explorer, an editor, or student? Then does ASUS have the Eee PC for you! According to this slide image taken by Engadget Chinese, it looks like ASUS will soon have a total of 23 differently configured models of the widely known Eee PC Netbook series--this includes previously released models, as well as "coming soon," and "who knows when."

The pyramid is sectioned off into three groupings of Eee models and what type of user those models would be targeted to. Apparently for the Elite user (whatever that means) there's the high-end … Read more

LG looking to get into mini-notebooks?

Perhaps the better question is, "Who isn't getting into mini-notebooks these days?"

The latest rumor floating around is that Korean electronics giant LG has asked MSI to build for it a tiny notebook based on Intel's Netbook reference design containing an Atom processor.

This one was started by Digitimes, and it says that MSI will make a Windows XP-based mini-notebook with an 8.9-inch screen, 2GB of memory, and a 120GB hard drive.

Those specs are closer to Hewlett-Packard's mini-notebook, the 2133 Mini-Note, released this spring, than MSI's much-talked about Netbook, the Wind. (MSI … Read more

Add Bluetooth to any notebook or PC for $7.99 shipped

It's the rare notebook that doesn't have Wi-Fi, but not all models offer Bluetooth. Though not a critical feature, the short-range wireless technology is handy to have for things like cordless mice and cell-phone tethering (i.e., using your phone as a modem). Meritline has a teeny-tiny USB-powered Bluetooth adapter on sale for just $7.99 shipped.

What I love about this thing is that it's so teeny-tiny: Just a rounded little nub. You can leave it plugged into a USB port and barely know it's there. This is a Bluetooth 1.2-compliant adapter with a … Read more

Curtains for desktops? If not now, when?

It's hard to remember the last time I bought a desktop computer. Sometime back in the stone age, I suppose, when vendors still bundled the machines with CRT screens.

My back-of-the-envelope tally of friends and colleagues turns up the same taste trend. Few say they plan to spend money on desktops any more. Those who do say it's because they need the bigger computer for serious gaming applications. I hang with a crowd of early adaptors, but it's not just the predilections of the double soy nonfat latte crowd. Now the statistics are starting to bear out … Read more

PC market laughs in the face of economic uncertainty

Despite concerns that a weakening U.S. economy would slow spending here and elsewhere, the PC market is chugging along respectably.

The market's success was foreshadowed Tuesday by Intel, whose solid quarter demonstrated that there's continued demand for notebook PCs particularly. Shipments of PCs worldwide grew 16 percent in the second quarter of this year, led by the Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions, according to IDC. Shipments were down in the Asia-Pacific region, usually a strong market for growth, but the results were even worse in the U.S., where units shipped grew 3.6 percent, according … Read more

Rumor: Everex planning new notebook

Even as Everex prepares to ship its much-awaited 8.9-inch Cloudbook Max with WiMax later this quarter, rumors are already spreading that the company will launch a 10.2-inch model to compete in the same space as the Asus Eee PC 1000 and MSI Wind. The leak, which is said to come from within Everex's manufacturing partner FIC, also indicates that the new Cloudbook will feature onboard 3G connectivity and optional WiMax.

It is not known whether the new 10.2-inch Cloudbook will use an Intel Atom or VIA processor or that it will run on Windows XP or … Read more

Sony's Stan Glasgow talks TVs, Blu-ray

After navigating some rough seas, Sony's Electronics division has been starting to right the ship.

Over the past year, the company has been forced to rethink its product lineup and catch up to competitors in some cases, but now the Japanese electronics giant's U.S. division is looking ahead and betting big on the future of flat-panel televisions and high-definition media.

CNET News.com sat down with the head of Sony Electronics' U.S. operation, Stan Glasgow, to talk OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) TVs, Blu-ray Disc, the importance of the PlayStation 3, consumer electronics, and the dwindling margins … Read more

Targus USB mouse doubles as VoIP phone, $17.95 (today only)

It's a mouse. No, it's a phone. It's two, two, two products in one! The Targus Portable USB Notebook Mouse and Internet Phone Combo (whew--exhausted from typing all that) is $17.95 (plus 5 bucks shipping) today only from Yugster, a deal-of-the-day site much like Woot.

On the surface, the TPUNMAIPC looks like a fairly typical USB-powered travel mouse--and $17.95 is not a bad price for such a rodent. But it also doubles as a voice-over-IP handset and speakerphone, meaning you can use it to take and make calls over Skype, Google Talk, Gizmo5, or whatever … Read more
