New iPhone gets fingerprint-resistant coating

The iPhone 3G S promises faster hardware, a better camera, and an unannounced feature: a multitouch screen that repels skin oil. We discovered this new feature while browsing the iPhone How To--Cleaning iPhone, which reads:

To clean iPhone, unplug all cables and turn off iPhone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button, then slide the onscreen slider). Then use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the iPhone. If your iPhone has an oleophobic coating on the screen (iPhone 3G … Read more

Simple but not oversimplified

What began as a freeware project to easily share basic screen captures and screen recordings has grown into a solid application and capture distribution system with a premium component. Jing's attractive application takes a sound, simple approach to capturing; begin by dragging the crosshairs to define your capture field and then take a still or start a recording. When you're done, save it to your computer or upload it to Screencast.com (operated by Jing's publisher), an FTP site, Flickr, or YouTube (for a premium). If you've got Snagit or Camtasia Studio, TechSmith's premium programs … Read more

Attractive aquarium screensaver

The 3D Fish School Screensaver is an attractive way for users to transform their computer screens into burbling aquariums. The simple interface and realistic graphics make this program a pleasure to use, but the limitations of the trial version are a somewhat significant drawback.

The trial version of the software allows users to choose between one freshwater and one saltwater scene; the full version includes additional options. Users can customize such features as the number and types of fish, amount of bubbles, background, and lighting. The screensaver features both bubble and wave sounds, each of which can be turned off … Read more

Video: Sony Ericsson Aino wants to entertain you

The Sony Ericsson Aino hopes to keep your attention glued to its 3-inch screen with a mountain of movie and music features.

Screen-capturing software

ScreenHunter Pro provides users with a program that quickly and easily replaces the traditional method of making a screenshot. While the program works well, users may want to try the free version instead.

Screenhunter has a fairly self-explanatory interface designed to help users toggle between options for capturing screenshots. For those who are still confused, the program offers a very in-depth Help file that walks through each function and your opportunities. While choosing between entire screen captures or focusing on a particular image and saving it was simple, we couldn't help but wonder why anyone would choose the paid … Read more

Jing 2.1 adds Web cam, capturing heft

The freemium screen capture and screen recording application Jing received an update on Tuesday that adds new video functionality to paying users, and a few other enhancements for all Mac and Windows users.

Two hotkeys now help Jing's capture crosshairs snap to common aspect ratios. Press Ctrl to maintain a 4:3 aspect ratio and Shift for 16:9 widescreen proportions. While locked into a ratio, dragging out the crosshair shows you boundaries for common screen measurements within that ratio that you can easily snap to, like 320?240 or 640?480. This is a nice addition in keeping … Read more

Will Zune HD challenge iPod Touch?

Microsoft wants its upcoming Zune HD to go head to head with the iPod Touch. Is that really plausible?

The Zune HD portable media player, announced last week, will feature an HD Radio tuner and an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) touch screen. It will use flash memory and a version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. It will feature an HDMI connection for streaming video to HDTVs, Wi-Fi connectivity, HD video support, and a built-in accelerometer.

I think that Microsoft's Zune HD, if as advertised, could supply some real competition for my iPod Touch.… Read more
