Asus to launch laptops with instant-on feature

Five new laptop models from Asus will incorporate DeviceVM's Splashtop instant-on software, the software maker said Thursday.

The Asus M70T, M50V, M51T, F8Va, and F8Vr will be the first laptops on the market to include the "rapid-start platform."

We've seen the technology, which Asus has licensed from DeviceVM and rebranded as Express Gate, before. It was first introduced last fall on a single Asus motherboard, and recently expanded to Asus' full P5Q series of motherboards.

Splashtop differs from the intant-on media players already found on many laptops because it's actually an embedded Linux OS with … Read more

Asus Ebox set to debut in June at Taipei show

Hang on to your loins--it is but seven days before the launch of the hotly anticipated Asus Ebox--the desktop version of the Asus Eee PC. Are we excited? Does a bear do his business in the woods and clear up the mess with a fluffy, white rabbit? That's a yes, geekoids!

Today, our sources have confirmed the Ebox--formerly known as the Eee DT--will have a 160GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM, and run the same Linux operating system found on the Eee PC. We won't know whether it'll use an Intel Atom CPU until Asus lifts … Read more

Circuit wars: Asus fends off accusations

Forget Intel and AMD for a minute. The two largest PC circuit board makers, Asus and Gigabyte, are at it.

PC motherboard maker spats have typically taken place below the radar. But a recent round of particularly sharp recriminations have become very visible because they go to the core of a new trend in marketing: How green is your motherboard?

This is what happened: Gigabyte, according to reports, said in Taipei earlier this month that Asus' EPU (energy processing unit)-based motherboards do not achieve the power savings that Asus claims.

In short, Asus claims power savings of just over 80 percent, … Read more

Asus: No WiMax for next Eee PC

WiMax supporters insist the technology is set to take off this year. If it does, it will have to do so without the help of the Asus Eee PC 901. After giving it some thought, Asus has decided not to integrate the long-range wireless technology in its next mini-laptop, citing a lack of maturity in the U.S. market, according to a report from DigiTimes.

Given the popularity of the Eee PC and Eee PC 900, Asus' current low-cost little laptops, a WiMax-enabled Eee PC 901 might have given the fledging wireless technology a boost later this year. Instead, WiMax'… Read more

Atom-based Asus Eee PC 901 spotted

It seems as if only yesterday we were marveling at Asus' new 9-inch Eee PC 900 (actually, it wasn't yesterday, it was Monday). About the only thing we didn't love about this pocket-sized marvel was its dated Celeron processor--especially since the fine folks at Intel have been talking up this whole Atom thing for so long (that's the company's new low-cost, low-power CPU especially made for netbook-style laptops).

We knew Asus was working on an Atom-based version of the Eee PC, and now we have the first photos of what will be called the Eee PC … Read more

Is the Eee PC still an impulse purchase?

If computer stores were like supermarkets and had a rack of impulse purchase items right by their checkout lanes, we could easily see the $399 Asus Eee PC sitting next to the candy bars and magazines. After all, for about the same price as a current-generation video game console, you get a smart, reasonably useful 7-inch laptop, for much less than the traditionally inflated prices of other ultraportables.

Of course, we always want a little more, so the Eee PC had to grow, adding a larger 9-inch screen and more SSD hard drive space. Now that we have got our … Read more

This week in laptops

Driving through West Hollywood earlier today, I found myself stopped by a gaggle of paparazzi standing in the middle of the road. I'm not sure who they were trying to shoot, but for the first time I kind of understood how they felt. I mean, we here at CNET were all over the Lenovo IdeaPad U110 like a 'razzo on a starlet. First, there was the news that it had arrived in CNET Labs. Then we posted our initial impressions after using the laptop for a day. And finally, the full Lenovo IdeaPad U110 review. But who were we … Read more

Nine-inch Asus Eee PC lands in the Lab--barely bigger than its 7-inch cousin

The postman brought us a late-afternoon present on this rainy (here in NYC, at least) Friday--the much-anticipated new 9-inch version of the Asus Eee PC netbook-style laptop.

At first glance, it's easy to mistake this for the popular 7-inch version, as the two share a nearly identical footprint. The 9-inch is bigger by maybe a quarter inch, and weighs 2.2 pounds, compared to the original's 2.04 pounds. Opening it up, you can see the display now fills more of the available space, moving the speakers away from the side of the screen.

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, … Read more

Lenovo's IdeaPad U110 lands in the lab

Chinese laptop maker Lenovo, keeper of fabled ThinkPad business brand, seems like its finally getting serious about making consumer laptops. The eagerly awaited Idea Pad U110 has just landed in the CNET Lab, and we're just as impressed with the design as we were when we first saw it back at CES 2008.

This 11-inch ultraportable reminds us of similar-sized systems such as the Sony Vaio TZ150 or the Toshiba R500--but with a newer 1.60GHz Intel Core 2 Duo L7500, we expect it to be a faster performer. With a hi-res display (1,366 x 768), a 120GB … Read more
