Analyst: Google OS to go on HTC handsets

Taiwanese handset maker HTC is expected to ship about 50,000 cell phones by the end of this year that use a mobile operating system from Google, according to a Fortune article that cites a report from a UBS analyst.

The phones won't be for sale until next year; the initial shipment will go to developers, says analyst Benjamin Schachter. Google is likely talking to other handset manufacturers, he says.

Google has declined to comment on rumors of its phone plans. Google is hosting an analyst day on October 24, and Schachter expects the company to talk about its … Read more

Google Docs goes mobile

Google unveiled Google Docs mobile this morning. It's a smaller, lightweight version of Google Docs and Spreadsheets, which lets you browse any stored documents, spreadsheets, or presentations on your mobile phone.

Like the mobile version of their calendaring service, Google has spent a considerable amount of time optimizing Docs for the iPhone--making items larger, and more finger friendly. iPhone users are also the only group who gets mobile access to the freshly launched presentations service, which shows up in thumbnail form with simplistic back-and-forth controls. Both services share a similar lack of editing options, as you can't go … Read more

Sprint brings HTC Touch to your fingertips

Today, Sprint officially announced its plans to offer the HTC Touch smartphone with availability starting on November 4 for $249.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. If you'll remember, we reviewed an unlocked version of the Touch back in June, which made headlines for its all-touch-screen interface--pre-iPhone release. Though we had major issues with the poor text entry input methods (or lack thereof), it didn't seem to bother too many CNET readers, garnering an average 8.5 user rating.

The Sprint HTC Touch features some enhancements and carrier-specific services not found on … Read more

Funambol and 1&1 shake up the mobile market

Funambol, the mobile open-source leader, just nailed a major win with 1&1, the world's largest web hosting service, to provide it with push email and a PIM (personal information management, including address book and calendar) synchronization service. The Funambol services will tie into Open-Xchange for collaboration, which 1&1 already uses.

Why Funambol? Great functionality/feature set, open source (source code matters to 1&1), and low cost. Put another way, Funambol offers 1&1 a solution that it can tweak to meet its customer requirements, thereby differentiating its services while still saving money.

That's the power of open source. And it's just one more proof point that Funambol is set to disrupt the mobile market:… Read more

T-Mobile announces Razr2 V8

We expected that it would happen, and today we got confirmation that the Motorola Razr2 has at long last arrived at T-Mobile. The carrier announced it would sell the Razr2 V8 for $249 with service, making it the last major carrier to offer Moto's Razr revamp. From the outside the V8 has the same sleek design as both the GSM V9 and CDMA V9m, but inside there are some important differences. The V8 lacks 3G support (T-Mobile has yet to launch a wireless broadband network) and it doesn't fully utilize the external display. For a full analysis, check … Read more

Samsung's SGH-T639: 3G or not 3G?

Earlier this week when we spotted the SGH-T639 under the T-Mobile section of Samsung's Web site, we were a bit confused. The SGH-T639, which looks a lot like the Samsung Hue, is rumored to be T-Mobile's first 3G phone, but we weren't expecting to see it until after T-Mobile had announced a 3G network. And since T-Mobile has yet to do that, we were left a little perplexed.

The SGH-T639 has yet to show up on T-Mobile's site, but PhoneSccop is reporting that the handset has been sighted in a few of the carrier's New … Read more

ATA Airlines detains passenger for using iPhone in 'airplane mode'

Apparently putting your iPhone in airplane mode is not the digital equivalent of returning your seatback to the upright position.

A flight attendant for ATA Airlines recently asked a flier watching a movie midflight on the way to Hawaii to shut off his iPhone, not for the perfectly reasonable reason that the man was watching the inane Jennifer-Love Hewitt vehicle I Know What You Did Last Summer, but because you're not allowed to use cell phones inflight. Casey, the iPhone user, told Consumerist that he tried several times to explain to the flight attendant that the iPhone was in &… Read more

If you're looking for another way to read Web content on your mobile phone, there's a new solution called Mippin that will let you browse and sort through popular Web feeds about as easily as you can using a desktop RSS browser. The service was created to tackle the problem of so many sites not offering a "mobile" version for cell phone users.

Mozilla developing a mobile browser...again

Finally! Years ago, Mozilla looked at doing a mobile web browser (dubbed "Minimo"). I was very hopeful at the time, but nothing came of the effort. Today, however, I saw news that Mozilla is at it again. With mobile booming, it's not a moment too soon.

Given the state of mobile browsers - they all stink in my experience - the timing is perfect.

As Mozilla continues to develop Mozilla2, the second version of the platform on which Firefox is built, it will add mobile devices as a category. That means developers of Mozilla2, which is expected to be complete in early 2009, will keep mobile phones in mind as they build the new platform....… Read more
