Asus officially shares its WiMax plans

Asus has announced the products it plans to display at this week's WiMax Expo Taipei, and the list includes few surprises. After all, GCT Semiconductor already shared details of a WiMax-equipped Eee PC 901. But for those of us who don't necessarily feel compelled to invest in a new laptop just to get wireless broadband connectivity, Asus is also showing off the WUSB25E2V2 (catchy!), a mirror-finish WiMax USB dongle.

The other products on display are plug-and-play base stations, also known as customer premises equipment. More details on these products, with such memorable model names as WMNV25E2+, are available … Read more

Hey, look! Full-size systems from Asus

Lest you be mistaken, Asus makes full-size systems, too. In addition to introducing its Eee Box SFF PC at Computex today along with adding WiMAX to its Eee PC minilaptop, Asus had its first gaming desktop on display along with its G70 gaming laptop.

The Ares Gaming PC serves up the expected high-end components, including an Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, and support for either Nvidia Quad SLI or ATI CrossfireX graphics. It'll carry up to 4TB of drive space and keeps all its parts running smoothly with a liquid-cooling system. As for … Read more

Digital frame doubles as a secondary display

Call us eternal optimists, but perhaps companies are starting to figure out that digital photo frames are among the most use-challenged inventions of the digital age. In recent months manufacturers seem to have begun trying to add functions that might actually make them worthwhile, whether they've built in a Webcam or used them for something like the "PhotoPhone," which displays a picture of the person who's calling.

Asus too seems to understand the concept, as it has introduced a 7-inch LCD frame with a "sub-display" feature that can turn it into a secondary screen … Read more

Asus officially announces Eee Box details

Word got out a little early this morning regarding Asus's small Eee Box, so we can share what we saw in a preview in our offices a few weeks back. The small, Wii-looking PC will hit the U.S. via online retailers (and perhaps a few specialty brick-and-mortar shops) later this year.

The listed dimensions of the unit are 8.5-inches high, 1-inch wide, and 7-inches deep, standing upright on its included stand. It can also lie down flat.

Official specs are as follows:

Operating system: Linux System/ Hardware Compatible with Windows XP CPU: Intel Atom N270 (1.6 … Read more

GCT claims WiMax chip in Asus Eee PC

WiMax is in the cards for the Eee PC. Asus will demonstrate notebooks Monday that integrate WiMax chips from San Jose, Calif.-based GCT Semiconductor.

Despite recent statements that the Eee PC 901 will not get WiMax, GCT Semiconductor announced--along with Asus--Sunday that Asus has integrated GCT's GDM7205 WiMAX single-chip silicon into the F8 notebook series and Eee PC.

GCT says the F8 series and Eee PC will be demonstrated with WiMax at the WiMax Expo Taipei that begins on June 2nd.

The widely-reported specifications for the Eee PC 901 are a 1.6GHz Atom processor, an 8.9-inch … Read more

Intel previews Asus Centrino 2 notebook with WiMax

As a Computex preview, Intel is showing off its "delayed" Centrino 2 platform via an Asus notebook.

A chunk of the Centrino 2 roll-out has been delayed until August 5--and WiMax even beyond that. Intel, however, is slated to do a Centrino 2 processor refresh on July 14.

"Today I've got my privileged hands on a brand spanking new Asus Centrino 2 ("Montevina" for us nerds) system," according to a pre-Computex Intel blog.

Intel, not surprisingly, is trying to build enthusiasm for Centrino 2 and WiMax. But, with chipset and WiMax … Read more

This week in laptops

The Eee PC launch went so swimmingly, now everyone is jumping into the pool. Dell's looking ready to make a splash with a mini Inspiron netbook, seen in the hands of Michael Dell himself at this week's All Things D conference. (Dell offered virtually no details on the product, except to say it is the "perfect device for the next billion Internet users.") Acer seems to be dipping its toes into the shallow end, with the rumored Aspire One netbook. MSI's Wind mininotebook sat poolside for a photo shoot. And champion swimmer Asus confirmed to … Read more

Asus to launch 10-inch Eee PC on Tuesday

We've just been on the phone to a spokesperson for Asus, who confirmed that the company will launch a 10-inch version of its popular Eee PC on Tuesday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.

The spokesperson said that the larger-screened model should be on sale in the U.K. in November. No other details are confirmed at the moment, but we would be amazed if the new Eee didn't use the new Intel Atom chips, which are due for launch at the same time.

This is significant, as the lack of Atom was our one big complaint … Read more

Acer gets in on the Netbook act

We just saw Dell's semi-undercover attempt at a small, inexpensive laptop, and now Acer is getting in on the action, if these leaked shots of something called the Acer Aspire One are to be believed.

First spotted on the Web site UMPC Portal, and then quickly spreading around blogville, it purportedly has a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 4GB SSD hard drive, and runs Windows XP on an 8.9-inch screen (like the Asus Eee PC 900).

No release date or price yet, but there's a strong possibility we'll see this unveiled at … Read more

Asus to launch laptops with instant-on feature

Five new laptop models from Asus will incorporate DeviceVM's Splashtop instant-on software, the software maker said Thursday.

The Asus M70T, M50V, M51T, F8Va, and F8Vr will be the first laptops on the market to include the "rapid-start platform."

We've seen the technology, which Asus has licensed from DeviceVM and rebranded as Express Gate, before. It was first introduced last fall on a single Asus motherboard, and recently expanded to Asus' full P5Q series of motherboards.

Splashtop differs from the intant-on media players already found on many laptops because it's actually an embedded Linux OS with … Read more
